It's an interesting concept. There's two approaches. Memphis Meats and Hampton Creek are trying to culture animal cells to basically grow meat without the rest of the animal. Impossible Foods is trying to create a veggie burger by assembling plant proteins that function identically to the proteins in beef to make a veggie burger that is virtually indistinguishable from the real thing.

The real interesting part of this is how it relates to the beef industry. Margins on real beef are super slim. If any of the imitation meet companies can get their process to the point where they can undercut beef by a decent percent, they'll capture a huge market just by virtue of beef being unable to price lower to compete.

lab grown meat will require the creation of synthetic plant/soy protein based media, right now they use fetal bovine serum, which costs around 200 dollars for 1L
