Robinhood earns revenue by collecting interest on cash/securities and fees from their Robinhood Gold service

The only "plans" are on an Australian and Chinese beta. Neither of which has gained much traction.

Reposting from tail end of previous thread.

Pretty good interview with Derek Ross of my pet penny stock Future Farm Technologies up on Technical 420. It's a bit of a hype piece but everything Ross states in the article is true. Keep in mind federal legalization of industrial hemp is much closer than rec sales of marijuana is in the US (there is already a bill making its way through the process right now):

https://technical420.com/cannabis-article/future-farm-positions-dominate-industrial-hemp-industry-starting-maine

It seems investors like this article as FFT is currently +11% today.

thanks man im still learning trading and this makes sense, the more investing a company has to do to generate a dollar in revenue the less as an 'investor' we should pay them forthe right to that profit

Is this also why almost all the biggest companies by M.Cap in the world are predominantly software, besides Apple? The extra revenue they generate just scales their stock price/mcap so much more than old boomer companies selling dumb hardware?

Ok, so software companies are much better economies of scale.
I can start a software start-up from my apartment on my couch and the only risk -- all I have to lose -- is my time.
Additionally, a website can scale to millions of users before experiencing any growing pains. If you have any monetization plan at all, you'll have fat wads of cash to pay for a team of brilliant developers to fix the issues for you when you finally do experience growing pains.

Hardware, on the other hand, requires an investment. To sell 1 million computers, I have to make or buy 1 million computers.

Software -> profit = revenue - (salary)
Hardware -> profit = revenue - (salary + cost of goods sold)

Specifically addressing the P/E ratios... Software companies expenses are salary. Salary is paying for employees to improve and grow your product.
If FB laid off all their employees, they'd still be making billions in revenue and only paying hundreds of thousands or so for the cost of running their servers. It'd be like 99% profit.
Alternatively, AAPL gets billions in revenue, but they have to pay billions to make those computers.

Hardware companies have to think about their profit margins in a way that software companies don't until they get to the scale of Google and are in the fortune 500.

Hardware companies have a completely different mentality when it comes to paying for employees. Employees cut in to the profit of each computer sold and contribute to how much each computer costs.

Salary is paying for GROWTH.
The main and basically only expense of software companies is salary.
The main expense of software companies is GROWTH.
Hardware companies have to pay for cost of goods sold and try to subsidize growth with the profit margins left over after taking out billions in costs of goods sold.

So the idea when investing in either of these types of companies is that you have to worry a lot more about debt and eventually bankruptcy with a hardware company since they have to spend money BEFORE making it, relative to a software company? So software trades at a much larger premium because they are much more likely to continue to generate top tier profit/revenue with a relative lack of costs necessary to faciliate that revenue?

And this basically shows up in investing with say sub 20 PE ratios for hardware companies and up to 60-80 PE ratios for software companies, generally speaking?

The higher P/E ratio is for the higher prospect of growth for software companies. Their products/services are easily scalable and require little capital expenditure. Besides, because of how the GAAP was conceived, the R&D are expensed which is not true. The knowledge and know-how are stored somewhere, so R&D should be capitalised. That's why tech companies like focusing on the non-GAAP figures.

And generally speaking, software companies boast higher ROIC and margins.

i dont know about JPM (might play a straddle), but i can tell you that these earnings expectations are far too fucking high. the volume on these banks going into earnings is unbelievably low (less than half of the average daily volume in BACs case atleast), not to mention the lack of volume overall. something is up and it seems a BUNCH of big money is sitting on the side waiting to see whats next.

im doing some research tonight and picking which banks i want to play straddles/calls on, and which i want to get puts for. BAC is already on my hitlist.

i have a terrible feeling that this ER is not going to be the saving grace that we need at all. on the contrary, with earnings expectations up to record highs (in the past few years at least) across the board on every bank, i expect some of these banks to miss terribly. i cant think of a single solitary reason why banks would be making that much more money for this quarter. its nonsense.

does anyone have any other major bank tickers that have ER in the next few days?

ha sure maybe. but im focused on big banks though, as i think theyre hiding something, and with the huge ER expectations, some are bound to blow it. i didnt save it, but baggy had a chart on BAC and the volume on the daily dropped off a goddamn cliff, and still hasnt come back. thats kind of odd behavior for the beginning of the ER season. perhaps people are just being cautious, and i wasnt really interested in it before, but with that YUGE dip (that hasnt recovered) on all of US finance, my curiosity is piqued.

also, does anyone know of a way i can see which other banks bank of america lends to? if they tank hard i expect those to take a hit as well.

People are still scared. Nobody wants to trade because they have no idea what's going to happen.
>im doing some research tonight and picking which banks i want to play straddles/calls on
I'm concerned more about the general economy than trying to play these banks. When banks start missing earnings, it's a sign of a looming recession.
>i have a terrible feeling that this ER is not going to be the saving grace that we need at all
Same.
>i cant think of a single solitary reason why banks would be making that much more money for this quarter. its nonsense.

They get their money from the feds. Any bank that isn't in the top 10 is probably getting their money from BAC or JPM.
I've heard banks have been getting around restrictions on subprime lending by loaning to smaller banks that can handle the risk, and they're fairly aware of it.

retail is still trading like dummies. clearly a lot of people buying bonds too. but bonds themselves have been acting funny which leads me to believe that banks will also be feeling this in some way.
>I'm concerned more about the general economy than trying to play these banks. When banks start missing earnings, it's a sign of a looming recession.
im concerned as well, but if i can play this right, at the very least ILL be doing alright. i dont want a recession, but i DO think one is definitely coming. this whole last decade was far too cheery
>Perhaps those nice tax breaks?
>I've seen a few good earnings reports recently. There's also BKS, which illustrated that sometimes they're from lay-offs.
that is something (tax cuts), but will they have taken effect in time to really effect the profits this quarter by like 17%? gotta say, i doubt it. although, i did hear bagholder was saying that BAC has been laying off a lot of people and making more ATM-only banks (ie no overhead from paying employees), so they could go either way. what ill probably end up doing is hedging against myself with some calls and doing some sort of bearish biased strangle. depends on what the IV looks like tomorrow though.

So, I get to hear that shit every fucking day.
The block chain probably will get rid of the feds. But, if you have any grasp of how savings, loans, and credit vs debit works -- as in, the business model that banks have had for thousands of fucking years -- you'd realize that all it means for the banking industry is that we should eventually be loaning out fucking buttcoins.

None of the managers that I've heard genuinely concerned about cryptos have ever traded any and are fairly behind the times.
I don't think cryptos keep them up at night, but some genuinely believe that the blockchain might put us out of business and sprinkle in a suggestion every so often of "How can we incorporate the blockchain into our projects?" or "How can we leverage/make use of the blockchain?" as if it's some kind of tool that we could just shove into our stack like Java

>> No.8880768

Since the risk/reward profile is asymetrical for shorting, you should go with 150% long /100% short.
I am not talking about leverage but the amount of each kind of trade.

>> No.8880773

>>8880659
Not if you have strong conviction about your short positions.
However, in terms of risk, 50/50 could even be generous and you might want to have more long.
It just depends on whether you are truly indifferent and equally successful with long and short positions -- if so, you should probably shoot for 50/50. If not and you have a thing for short trading, you're fine.

shorting is by its very nature more risky, less rewarding, and with unlimited loss potential.

the thing to be aware of (which has saved my ass from a good deal of squeezes) is to constantly monitor the short interest on whatever youre shorting. you start seeing it get too crowded, you leave. it doesnt matter whether you are up or down in the trade. LEAVE. squeezes suck and depending what youre trading you could easily get LIQ'D if youre being stupid about it. especially with leverage

Not offended in any way. I don't think the banks will ever control the code that backs cryptos, and I hope they don't because they'd turn it into something they can manipulate like the USD.
Also, banks are generally incapable of doing anything right or innovative with tech.
However, if banks start doing savings and loans with it, which is all that they're SUPPOSED to do, that would be fine with me.

Fuck. If only.
I somewhat found a way to short diversity though. There's an index called SHE. Check it out. It's growing less than SPY, which I believe it's based on, so you would short it relative to SPY -- your profit would be purely the ability for male lead companies to outperform those lead by females.
Only problem is Robinhood doesn't provide options on it.
What platform do you use? Does it provide a means of shorting SHE?

Are you adjusting EPS to the stock price? If not, that metric is meaningless.
