A swing trader might want to be in a position from a couple days to a week, and so they use 1h - 1d.
A day trader will want to be in a position for 12 hours or less, so they use 15m - 2hr.
A scalper will want to be in a position for an hour or less, and plenty of them use anything from 1m - 30m.
