About half of cargo ships at sea are carrying EMPTY containers. Why? Disproportionate trade, which means a country like USA imports 1000 containers from China, but only fill 10 to send back and the rest get returned empty. Not only that, China is even chartering ships from different countries just to buy and bring in shipfulls of EMPTY containers.
I think there might be a market for a collapsible/takedown shipping container to greatly increase the efficiency of empty container shipment to China.

I've got some models, and can possibly work on some prototypes, but I need a chink business partner to help me pitch this idea and find buyers.

What do?

>> No.8726713

i'd imagine that those things would need to be tough. those containers go everywhere... ship, trains, semi trucks... contractors use them as offices... Offices use them for storage... etc...

how hard it would be to make a collapsible something into an bomb proof shipping container. You're not talking about a fucking pup tent anon.

Not OP, but you could fit a lot more on a ship and pay less to return them. Isn't that obvious?

>> No.8726736

You can move more of them back and forth when they're empty?
At sea, they spend close to half their life empty. Including on land, containers spend 2/3rds of their life empty.

It's easy if you live in Toronto. Just go to RBC Royal bank (mostly chinese business clients due to their competitive interest rates) and leave your card with some information around. Better yet go to Asian-American business events and try to pitch to the people giving speeches that are in the import/export business. Or go directly to chinese import/export businesses and speak to the people there. You're not going to find somebody established with connects on 4chan lmao.

>> No.8726978

>>8726804
Not necessarily, lighter flexible objects can be stronger than heavy rigid ones if engineered correctly. The question would be "why reinvent the wheel?". All these export businesses would have to throw out their shipping containers or repurpose them (not a bad idea for housing) so his solution would have to be amazing and affordable in order to be viable.

Sorry, didn't explain very well.
They tend to accumulate since they're obviously not unloaded and sent back immediately. So in my example they only send 990 empties back because that's the ships capacity. It's too the point where China's starting to charter empty cargo vessels to countries just to retrieve their own containers.

>>8726713
>>8726804
These are good questions and like I said I don't have an actual prototype. But this was tried about a decade ago and it only failed because it wasn't profitable. I think demand for this has grown exponentially though and with some new material sciences insights , I think it could be profitable this time.

You won't be able to find a well connected partner with zero prototype. There are likely thousands in your same position, and a few with actual prototype. Don't seek out a partner until you have a tried and tested prototype better than the others and can answer the hard hitting questions. Otherwise you'll make a fool out of yourself.
>No offense bro, but chinks lack American ingenuity
Sorry to burst your bubble, but Asians are the highest earning group in your own country. The reason they aren't innovating is because it's not profitable. A lot of engineers forget that it isn't about designing the most innovative structure, it's about creating a viable and easily adopted option for an existing problem. You're lucky that shipping container homes are gaining traction lately, design an option that will be cheaper than the amount that they can sell their current containers for.

Sup OP
Don't mean to piss on your idea but have you thought about the ships?
You're suggesting collapsible containers so a single ship can bring back 10 ships' worth of empty uncollapsed containers, right? Well, the ships that brought the full containers must return either way:

Current setup
>10 ships bring 10 lots of full containers
>10 ships return with 10 lots of empty containers

Introducing collapsible containers
>10 ships bring 10 lots of full containers
>1 ship brings back 10 lots of collapsed containers
>9 of them return empty

Doesn't sound like there is a sizeable reduction in cost
