Chainlink token's transferAndCall function that makes the LINK token an ERC677 and not an ERC20 token is only to be completely certain it doesn't fail the Howey Test.

Another organization's legal team wanted this to be beyond reproach. ERC20s and smart contracts have elsewhere worked fine without this function.

Interestingly enough I wonder if the strategy of constantly telling token holders that link is not needed to run a node (they always say this about link held on the node, though acknowledge to accept contracts that require bidding you'll need link) could also be a strategy to be certain this is not a security. They've put a lot of thought into this.
