Can someone please help me get started? Im young and honestly have no idea what to do. all online sources say to hire a broker but you guys say online brokers like etrade. Is etrade good to start with?

Here's what I did: Just use scottrade, they have really good charting services, low commissions, and a decent mobile app. Sign up and fund your account. Then, buy an ETF or mutual fund as your first position so you don't have to worry about diversification. You can add individual company stock later. I recommend something like JKE (large cap ETF) to start with. Then build off of that. For example, if you believe Europe will recover soon, you can add IEV to your portfolio. If you believe the price of oil will increase, you can add XOM, CVX ect. As time goes on and you form a better understanding of the market, you can customize your portfolio to meet your investing goals.

I recommend reading the WSJ every day. I also consider investment outlooks released by investment banks (Goldman and RBC have these for free online) to be very good resources.

Continue studying through books and online resources. It's fun to make money through investing. One more thing: don't churn your account.

You're smart. You're good at investing. Keep it up, you have a knack for picking individual stocks. Just go by feel. You're better at this than everyone else. You're gonna make a ton of money!

I invested 90 k in oil in February. Vanguard energy fund, uco, uso, xom, pgn, hero, Hal, rig, Mro, lots,of other service providers. Basically full spectrum of oil exposure. Made 10k so far and was up even higher a month ago. But holding out long term think there's potential for some of these do go up 2+x their current value. We'll see!

I think it should be a requirement that when making these asinine threads, the OP is required to disclose which dead relative they acquired their seed capital from.

I actually acquired 900k in real estate this year from a relative, I only had to pay the capital gains tax which was 168k but I took out a loan and they gave it to me even with zero work history because I had collateral, the 20k I had was saving up every dollar I got from doing odd jobs for family and saving up anything I got from holidays, even flip a few electronics.

I'm only focusing though on the money I invested that i saved myself, my inheritance wont ever be gambled with and iv got more coming my way in the next few years.

Also, threads like this don't work. Everyone here is an asshole skeptic. Any sibilance of "success" is torn down. For instance, in a past thread like this, I tried to tell you fuckers that turned 2.8k into 50k over the course of 3 years trading nothing but penny stocks priced under .007. I wasn't, and am not, lyning. I was then ridiculed for a good 20 posts. You can see the same thing happen over at /fit/ sometimes. never change /biz/.

Agree completely. That's part of what drove my investment. The whole oil crash seems like a scam they're all in on to me. Feels like they're trying to instill a false sense of security about the amount of oil to undercut environmental arguments. I mean until the last few months when was the last time you heard there was plenty of oil to go around. So hopefully I'll profit from these evil fucks!

Because the real estate I inherited is an apartment building, it makes 30k a year after expenses and goes up in value about 10kyear flat. In 1-2 years when I have the managing a building gig down perfectly il branch out for more, in the meantime managing one apartment building and going to college is enough for me by far.

have you even seen XOM's balance sheet and financials? they got fucked pretty hard by the decline in price, and there's more of a chance of a massive sell off (see previous words) and even if that doesn't happen, the fed hiking rates up will hurt XOM

I invested over half of it in goog calls in 2013 when they were still around 800 a share and I made 4 times my money. With a bunch of other bad investments the grand total was around 4500.
