Are there any games built on the ETH chain that aren't boring pyramid schemes?

No. And that is all dApps will be able to do until LINK solves the oracle problem.

how does the oracle problem prevent games from being interesting? im not 100% sure i understand

why do games even benefit from being on the eth chain

I didn't say games. I said dApps. Games, or should I say """games""" will always be ponzis or pyramid schemes.

>> No.7735055

the point is, link is a bet against ethereum, or there even being one dominant smart contract platform, because if there is, it will clearly have to have its own oracle network.

Yeah man, affordable/secure random number generation is what we need.

I was thinking about a really cool pokemon type game on blockchain today.

If an engine like unity could 'talk' to blockchain somehow, You could make something pretty amazing. Although I'm an artfag, I'm also a brainlet so I don't think I could make something like that though, even though I'd really like to.

Avoid duping? This is the only real benefit I'd see from a game on a blockchain other than make it into a ponzi scheme

Random Number generation is difficult on Ethereum without oracles. Also off chain processing via oracle, ie amazon lambda... although I am going to have a crack at using something like golem via kyber network for something like this.

To go a bit further, most games rely a klot on random number generation. Lets take a simple rpg as example. Pretty much everything in an RPG battle system relies on random numbers ie: virtual versions of dice rolls that you would have in classic tabletop games like DnD

I am working on a mogul style game at the moment, pretty much a copy of one of the earliest trading games that became popular on MS DOS and fuck me, secure random number generation is a pain in the fucken ass, there are solutions but they are expensive. I am hoping that if I cant get it right in the next couple of months then Enjin may offer what I need.

wow i thought this whole thing was some kind of fuckin joke but it seems like random number generation is actually annoying in solidity (https://ethereum.stackexchange.com/questions/191/how-can-i-securely-generate-a-random-number-in-my-smart-contract))

still it seems like a solved problem, certainly etheroll figured it out

i am a stinky linky myself and i think oracles obviously serve an obvious and important purpose, but random number generation?! how is the existing solution not satisfactory?
