Year of the Bear Edition

Popular brokers for stock trading:
Robinhood
>commission free and no minimum to open
http://www.robinhood.com

> How is it free?
Robinhood earns revenue by collecting interest on cash/securities and fees from their Robinhood Gold service

> It's been X days, why isn't my account verified yet?
Not being approved in 3 days seems to be the new norm. Nevertheless, call/email their support if you've been waiting more than that.

> When is it coming to my country?
The only "plans" are on an Australian and Chinese beta. Neither of which has gained much traction.

Interactive Brokers
>$1 commission per 100 shares. $10k minimum to open, $3k if 25 or under. Lowest margin interest. Free API access

TD Ameritade
>$6.95 commission per trade. No minimum to open. Fantastic data/charting through their free ThinkorSwim service

Morning! Stocks I'm shilling for the day are KTOS (Kratos Defense), AQMS (Aqua Metals).

I'm watching CLD (Cloud Peak Energy) due to it being at a low and their ER is tomorrow, after the bell I believe. It should be noted this is a value investment, bordering on contrarian, and as such is a risky bet.

I'm not sure about that.. Say for instance I buy 200 shares of X company with one order and then a few minutes or days later I buy 200 more shares of X to double my position. My broker divides those shares into separate "tax lots" because they were purchased at different times for different prices. Then if I sell all 400 shares via a market order and it takes 5 different transactions to sell all the shares then I've also had to enter all of those transactions separately. Not sure if I've got to do it that way but that's the way my broker does it. It doesn't really matter to me because I just export all the data from Etrade straight into turbotax and it fills everything out for me.

EM countries and companies borrow money in USD

EM bond rates will likely to drop, making their bonds more expensive

You can buy shit stocks in a bull market and lose money too, you have to pick and choose which companies to short just like you pick and choose which companies to buy. I think that TWTR is incredibly overvalued since they shot up like 30% after their last ER and speculation that they'll be bought out by someone. Once the hype dies down the stock will fall back down to earth.

I think companies such as Snapchat and Twitter are garbage

But shorting them is very tricky because of the emotion and focus around them

As for TWTR, it reminds me of the situation of TTWO after their Jun17 ER

They had a stellar quarter and TTWO pretty much soared non stop during the following quarter.

I think TWTR might follow the same path right now

It could also mean that the stock is just consolidating and getting ready for its next leg up. I'll just set a stop loss at $35.5 and see what happens.

>Paul Britton, founder of the $5.9 billion Capstone Investment Advisors, was on his way to his Manhattan office one day last fall when he received unexpected investment advice from his Uber driver.

>It went like this: “‘There’s this unbelievable company, these guys just crushed it -- not sure whether it’s in biotech or a technology business, but they’re up 80 percent this year. It’s this company called XIV,’” Britton, 44, remembered the driver saying. Britton said he responded, “I’m like, ‘I’m sorry to have to tell you this, mate. That’s not a company.’”

One vague dream of mine is that I would like to design and teach a course in "financial literacy." I feel like "financial literacy" as it is usually conceived is terrible, just a lot of "if your bank pays 10 percent compound interest and you start with $100 then in three years will you have more or less than $130?" and other arithmetic trivia that is of limited interest in our world of low interest rates and flourishing Ponzi schemes. "Financial literacy" will tell you that the answer is "more than $130," because compound interest Einstein blah blah blah, but the correct answer is "less than $130," and likely zero, because if your bank pays you 10 percent interest in the United States in 2018 it is a Ponzi and will steal your money. There is room for improvement is my point here.

I think personal finance should be a required high school course in the US and actually teach kids how to budget, how savings and retirement accounts work, and really drive home how debt works, especially when it comes to credit cards, auto loans, and student loan debt.

So many people my age took out massive college loans well over their tuition amount just to have money for paying all their bills and going out all the time. My friend's sister got a dance degree from a state university on ~$70k in loans while he got an electrical engineering degree from a state university for ~$35k in loans. She was taking out loans so she could drive 5 hours away every weekend to see her boyfriend in another city and go out and party all the time. Shit's fucking ridiculous in this country.

This is really going to be the stupidest possible development for the saga of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac: If corporate taxes are lowered, then the government-sponsored enterprises' deferred tax assets will be less valuable, which will require a writedown, which will flow through their income statements, which will cause the enterprises to have a net loss, which will reduce their capital below zero, which will require them to draw on their financing lines from Treasury in order to have positive capital. None of those things are things. Nothing will happen. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will continue insuring mortgages, and will continue charging fees, and those fees will continue to be above their costs, and they will continue to make large operating profits. But because of a series of accounting fictions -- mark-to-market accounting for deferred tax assets through the income statement, but also the dumb accounting in which Fannie Mae give their profits to Treasury and then have to draw on Treasury when they have losses, instead of just consolidating with Treasury like the wholly-owned arms of the state that they are -- we are now faced with the likelihood that the tax bill will require "another bailout of Fannie and Freddie." And now politicians and GSE types and their allies will go around saying "this is another bailout" and "bailouts are bad" and "Fannie and Freddie should be allowed to retain earnings in order to avoid just this sort of bailout," and I will quiver with impotent fury because that's so stupid, that's not a thing, if Fannie and Freddie give money to Treasury now and take it back later that is just as good as (better than!) them keeping the money themselves, every discussion of Fannie and Freddie is based on a nonsensical confusion of accounting entries with economic reality, and it just makes me sad and tired.

Otherwise, regarding their financial statements, I find their inventory to be rather high regarding to their quarterly turnover... that usually means they might be marking up their gross margin and have way less inventory than stated... or that they don't declare all of the real revenues (especially the cash money they receive).

That would explained their ballooning debts because it makes no much sense for such an old company that didn't undergo any significant changes to carry that much debt.

I'm not a boomer but the reason I haven't got into crypto yet is, it's literal gambling on most of the crytpo that isn't the big name ones, the process of buying it is a pain in the ass, it's entirely unsafe. Honestly, if I didn't have to deal with the weird wallet thing and the weird limits on how much you can sell, and freezing the websites so you can't do sell at all, I would buy in.

That was pretty much the whole story. I turned 5k into 28k in about 2 months on FX binary options & then went to cash out and all they gave me was my initial deposit. At least they were 'nice' enough to do that I guess. It gave me the funding to start my Nadex account that I turned into the dividend growth portfolio I own today worth nearly 80k. It all works out in the end.

Seriously feels good to not worry about money ever, the most i had in crypto at one point was 20k, started with only 3k but the constant anxiety was a problem, especially when that 20k went to 18k then to 15k then i pulled out and left just a little in. Best feeling in the world is to not worry about money 24/7.

Just saying, stocks are kind of a sham too. Most of the time you get no voting power and buying from another holder doesn't fund the company whose stock you buy. Valuations are grossly detached from fundamentals right now. The only thing the "ownership" of a stock gives you is the ability to get your share if the company gets liquidated (at which point the shares will be worthless) and if the company decides to give some scraps as dividends to you. Personally I think dividends are the only real value of stocks and they're kind of spotty often.

Rising interest rates have always been precedent to a large correction in the stock market. Rates have been so low for years that any increases are gonna hit the debt-ridden US economy and the companies with big loans hard.

Bonds are soon reaching 3%, at which point they'll keep sucking more money out of equities.

These combined with the showcases of increased volatility and uncertainty might be enough to start a crash sooner than later. We might also have one more bullrun before anything happens, but I'm not risking anything until the trend is clear.
