Is networking essentially a fancy buzz word for nepotism? You’re still counting on someone you made friends at the top to help you get you a job, right?

yes. Although nepotism in business is widely understood as giving a job to an underqualified but related person, it is not how i experience it.

As a employer i'd much rather base my employments on more than an application and a one-hour talk. its that basic.

Nevertheless it is a social advantage to create bonds by helping people out in your network so that they could potentially help you out in the future.

Making friends and influencing people is the single most important skill anyone can learn but it is almost impossible for many because it requires an insane amount of self control and discipline while for others it comes quite naturally
