Popular brokers for stock trading:
Robinhood
>commission free and no minimum to open
http://www.robinhood.com

> How is it free?
Robinhood earns revenue by collecting interest on cash/securities and fees from their Robinhood Gold service

> It's been X days, why isn't my account verified yet?
Not being approved in 3 days seems to be the new norm. Nevertheless, call/email their support if you've been waiting more than that.

> When is it coming to my country?
The only "plans" are on an Australian and Chinese beta. Neither of which has gained much traction.

Interactive Brokers
>$1 commission per 100 shares. $10k minimum to open, $3k if 25 or under. Lowest margin interest. Free API access

TD Ameritade
>$6.95 commission per trade. No minimum to open. Fantastic data/charting through their free ThinkorSwim service

Are there any conditions that would cause most or all of the algorithms to start selling off all at once? And I understand that there are breaks to prevent this on a massive scale, but are there theoretical scenarios that wouldn't trip the breaks?

>> No.7593921

If the market falls a lot in a day, you can count on the fact that it was because some ... entities ... saw stocks go down, got nervous, and decided to sell. Were the entities computers, or humans? Well in some crude sense they were 100 percent computers: If you want to sell a stock, you pretty much go to a computer and push a sell button, or maybe you call your broker and she pushes the sell button. A computer intermediates pretty much every trade. But that is a silly way to think about it, and the opposite is also true: Even if you use a computer algorithm to make the selling decision, instead of just to execute a decision that you made, deep down the computer is only systematizing human behavior. Systematizing the behavior might make it more extreme, or it might make it more rational and disciplined, but it probably won't change the basic behavior much. If you program a computer to sell things when they go down, it is because you want to sell things when they go down. If you didn't have the computer, you'd be selling things when they went down anyway. Why blame the tool?

reminder that virgin soyboys are better hedge fund managers than alpha chads

"We show that high-testosterone hedge fund managers significantly underperform low-testosterone hedge fund managers after adjusting for risk. Moreover, high-testosterone managers are more likely to terminate their funds, disclose violations on their Form ADVs, and display greater operational risk. We trace the underperformance to high-testosterone managers' greater preference for lottery-like stocks and reluctance to sell loser stocks. Our results are robust to adjustments for sample selection, marital status, sensation seeking, and manager age, and suggest that investors should eschew Chad hedge fund managers."

I'd say toss a few thousand dollars into it and put 75% of your money into index funds and use the other 25% to play around with trying to pick stocks and learning how to trade / invest. As you learn more then you can start moving more money out of the index funds and into single companies that you pick.

The "issue" with dividend investing is that you need a lot to make a solid paycheck. I'd suggest using that amount to build up to at least 5 figures and then getting on the dividend train. There are other people here who can help you with that kind of investing, not I though.

Dividends are for chumps and get taxed at higher rates than capital appreciation. Given a choice between the same pre-tax total return, you should prefer more of it from capital gains than dividends because of preferential tax treatment. This is true but there is also the fact that these program’s often do things that are completely unexpected and obviously irrational when the variables start to go to the extremes. This could (and has in the many flash crashes) lead to irrational behaviour which might not be easy to correct afterwards. For example if there was a flash crash right before an options payout, it could lead to massive losses (or gains)

it took me about a year to learn that dividend investing is shit, it's all good until one day all your gains plus dividend gains are gone.

Only way i see dividend investing working out well is if you pick out stocks on S&P 500 or DJIA that pay out a good dividend and you dollar cost average all the way to retirement. Anybody trying to chase big dividend payers for the short term game needs to be extremely active imo

Luckily in the US our social security and medicaid / medicare bullshit is paid for through "payroll taxes" that are only levied on a person's regular income (~7% paid out of the employee's wages and a matching ~7% paid by the employer -- if you're self employed then you have to pay both shares so you pay close to 15%). Even though short term capital gains are taxed at the same rate as a person's regular income, they don't have the additional payroll taxes levied against them.

The problem is the same as BGFV : shrinking revenue but otherwise financially healthy (mainly no debt and a manageable level of working capital)

Generally, the management cares about giving return to their shareholders in the form of dividends (pay-out ratio >90%).

You just have to be sure that they can maintain the nominal dividend value for a few periods.

Also, as a former retail business owner, the PP&E on the balance sheet is nowadays worth nothing if the business is not located in a prime location of a big city.

>Generally, the management cares about giving return to their shareholders in the form of dividends (pay-out ratio >90%).
>You just have to be sure that they can maintain the nominal dividend value for a few periods.
I'm not too worried about the dividends desu, more about the share structure and the value as in assets they own and that they are actually profitable. If they cut the divi for a little it should come back soon after due to them doing a share buy back, if they can buy back a few million shares thats a few million less people to pay a dividend out to. They've been doing alot to shape up their operations, i've seen many stocks perform like this for awhile only to have them shoot up overnight due to some unexpected stellar earnings, i've also seen stocks perform like this then get delisted and halted for some type of investigation. Anything could happen, but i'm watching the value and the share structure with it at this point.

Imo that is the biggest problem with BGFV right now, there isn't any hype around it's earnings, brick and mortar are a dieing breed, everyone knows that, I know that and completely understand that but I focus more on the trade. There are plenty of OTC stocks that go from .01 to .05 in 1-2 days and the company doesn't even do shit. Accumulation and distribution combined with share structure has done me well these past few years so i'm sticking to it. heres a quick video on what i usually look for in a chart after i have looked into their share structure and potential upcoming dilution.

it also helps if you have time frame in mind and what your strategy is.

Some people want to trade and then their trades turn to investments some peoples investments turn into trades.

Learning the difference between your trades and investments as well as risk and time frame is important.

i've been doing that same strategy for the past couple years. It's not for everyone though, some stocks can take awhile to start trending back up, if there is dilution it may never start trending back up. I have many different sources of income so accumulating something for a few months that i feel is a good buy is no problem to me, i can sit there and average down for a few months. If share structure changes, im out of there though.

Well i have a fixed amount that I want to invest. Can i look at index funds as a kind of long term CD with a better rates (assuming the index has steady yearly growth)?

Considering I dont have the time or knowledge to get deep into investing, I was hoping that I could find something that would give a good return in a long term frame.

If i got all into it, i could try to buy & sell and gamble for that golden %12 annual. But im realistic, and not expecting huge gains with little work. Pretty much substituting length of time for amount of work.

It is simple : cash = guarantee 0% return
With stocks/index funds/bonds, prices can go down but they can also go up
With an index fund, you are sort of betting that a certain sector or country will grow

For example, if you have faith in America, look for ETFs following US stocks (example : VOO, SPY). If you think healthcare will be the next sector to grow, buy IBB

Go on etfdb.com and look at their screener. Look for ETF with low fees and good liquidity (high daily volume).

And instead of going all in with your funds, buy the ETFs little by little, every 3 months for example.
