The trick to not getting screwed on ebay is to sell low cost items. People always post about how they got fucked while selling their playstation on ebay. Well large items attract scammers. Plus when you're only selling one item, if you do get hit, it sucks.

If you're selling hundreds of items you paid $2 for, getting a random scammer costs you less than $5.

Plus if you are bringing in several thousand or more a month the rules change. Suddenly ebay is a little more friendly to you and more willing to help you out.

What kind of documents do you wish you saved to show them your deductions?

I've been keeping my invoices from my suppliers but that's about at far as it goes, all of my transactions for shipping and eBay fees are on PayPal, should I be printing those out or.....?

You get lower rates if you import in bulk.
You can charge more if the item will arrive in 3 days from the US as opposed to 3 weeks from China.
You have no control over the quality of the product or shipping.
If the chinks mess up, you get hit with the feedback and chargebacks.
The chinamen will just cut you out totally and sell on ebay right next to you for cheaper.

Started fucking around on Ali-baba, I'm starting to form ideas about selling small, cute looking items that wealthy college girls are happy to overpay for. I'm thinking about small items that have a use, like usb sticks shaped like animals, wristbands, stickers, key chains, factory made "crafts", phone cases, and various items with my college's logo on it. (I know I won't have a license to sell items with the universities logo, but I'll be small enough so that they won't notice).

I'm thinking about selling around campus but I don't know how I can set up a spot because I definitely won't be allowed. I could also sell on my college's craigslist group on facebook and outside of college sporting events.

I'm thinking out loud here obviously. I guess I have two questions:

1. How can I sell stuff to my fellow college students in person as close to campus as possible without getting told to stop by my university? I'd like to just set up a folding table with all my crap on it. Maybe just off of campus, I'm not sure what the law is on selling on sidewalks or parking lots and if so, they're actually enforced.

2. Cheapest shipping methods from mainland china for small items that don't take up much space or weigh a lot.

I KNOW there's a market for this stuff, I always see these girls throwing daddy's money around. And I've noticed how much they'll pay for "cute" items when they're with their friends, they all fawn over an owl shaped phone case and then all four friends will drop $10 on one without a second thought. I just need to figure out how to sell stuff in areas near campus with heavy foot traffic without being shut down.

>>748193
That's a great idea for some side money. I have no clue about the legal matters you mention as I'm not an amerifag, sorry.
Regarding the shipping, I always ask for them to arrange it from their door to my door and give me a price. Sometimes DHL is the best option, others China or Singapore Post. Then I can either negotiate it down or go for it if it seems fair enough.

Remember that the price is always negotiable, but you don't wanna look like a kid trying to do what you're trying to do as they won't take you seriously. Be serious, but friendly. Most of them really appreciate some personal talk, like family and stuff.

Good luck

Out of the few dozen of cases I've had I've only been screwed on two.
Last week I got an item returned back because the buyer didn't provide a valid address. I messaged them saying I needed one and to provide a real name(they used an alias). The responded by opening a case and saying ''I ve sent other items to this address under this name wirh no problems, but this never came in.''. They had 0 feedback and a username that looked like they had palm smashed the keyboard at sign up.
I called eBay and they closed the case in my favor and I kept that faggots money. Just went back to the listing and added it back on there. They can't leave any feedback and I blocked them so they can't message me.

The main issue is that if your school finds out they don't have to resort to legal actions, they can just expel you from school, which could basically cost you thousands of dollars. A Chinese student at my college had an ebay business he ran out of his dorm room. His RA knew about it but didn't care, he mentioned it to someone and it got back to the staff and he was kicked out of the dorms because you're not allowed to do business in them. Sucked for the kid because he was a foreign exchange student, so he was boned.

Most US cities don't allow selling on the sidewalk and you will be shut down very quickly and possible arrested. You need to get a permit from the city in most places to have a garage sale.

As for shipping, DHL is expensive but it gets here in days. China post is cheap, but it takes weeks.

>>748443
You can (and should) request a sample of merch before you buy it. This can be 1 to a couple dozen. You pay much more for a sample though, so only plan on requesting samples if you really want to buy the item. They sometimes refund you the price of samples when you buy your first actual order. As for minimum order quantity, it can range from 1 to 100,000+. You have to look and it depends very much on the item.

You can find brand name items, you can find brand name clones (items that are identical to a brand name but without the licensing), you can find knock offs, and you can find total shit.

I would be highly suspect about buying anything computer related. I would only recommend doing it if you can test the product yourself. I mean actual testing, not plugging in a PCI card and playing Skyrim.

I have a feeling you will find almost everything to be incorrect on speeds, size, and clock times. Just remember, if your customers get shit products, you have to answer for it, not your supplier.

>> No.748553

One of the most surprising items that sell well are nonfunctional laptops and e-scrap. You can make a lot of money by just taking apart computers and separating the parts.

You could also make money clearing out tech from local businesses. I've done a couple office clearouts, you definitely need a large truck. Computer repair shops have tons of it and sometimes will pay for you to take it away and recycle it.

If you have any electronics or computer hardware repair skill, you can also just learn to fix it. Nothing ever goes to waste, just decreases as you go from viable eBay item to scrapyard.

I`ve been using Ebay and Paypal for almost 12 years.

My biggest gripe is the Ebay International Shipping program where Ebay adds on a cost, which is only fully determined at the end of the auction, to act as the Broker and Shipping Agent. Basically the Buyer pays an extra fee for the Seller to ships through an Ebay office. The idea is that the item will be exempt from Duty charges but they apply this duty fee to items to which duty would not apply anyway.

Also, I don`t think Sellers are aware that Buyers may avoid their items because Ebay is making this extra money on top of the sale price.

I got scammed on eBay, compiled evidence on their site of the scam ring (one that was pulling in thousands of dollars), and they deleted my account for posting the evidence on their discussion boards after refusing me giving it to their support line because "We can't take evidence from customers."

I was 16 and used my parents' email to sell my RC car (those hobby grade ones). Someone bought it, waited two weeks after it was already delivered, and then filed that they received it and it was broken beyond repair. eBay sided with them, took back the money, and said I had a limited amount of time to respond or that'd be it.

So I did, asked the online RC community for help, and what did we find? My car (he didn't even remove the identifying marking/labeling that only my car had in its sale images) for sale on another account. It turns out the guy was buying thousands of dollars in RC stuff (from first-time/casual sellers), using eBay's customer service to say the sellers never shipped the items, getting the refunds because the people wouldn't respond in time or didn't get shipping tracking, and sell them on a different account that was tied to a brick-and-mortar RC store.

So we compiled the evidence; correlating identical purchases and sells from his two accounts, all of my sale info on the RC car, and the listing he'd posted that had my RC car. I sent it in to eBay, and they said they couldn't look at it. For going through the trouble, they did at least set the conditions of the refund so that if he didn't return the item in 14 days (plus like 7 for shipping), I'd keep the money.

The guy knew he was caught, but agreed to that and tied up the money for three weeks of my summer break. Afterward, eBay deleted my account for being 16 when I outed the guy on their discussion board, even though the account was created/owned by a 40-something year old parent. His stores were still there last I checked. 'Tis why I hate eBay.

Well the issue with this question is, 'm not going to tell you what to sell because if it's actually good, I'd be losing money.

Do your research, you're thinking too broad. Specialize, think of weird shit. I always hear things like "I'll sell keychains" well there are a thousand sellers who sell them. Now if you said I'll sell keychains that feature a donkey show, I'd bet your competition is non existent.

Search random shit you think of, are there less than 50 people selling it? Is yours different/better than what is being sold? Is everyone selling it from China? If yes to any of these, start selling.

By taking lots of expert tier pictures. having them drycleaned before shipping, and by listing something people actually want and will pay for.

I honestly don't know enough about retro/used formalwear to say anything about it. List one and find out, just start it at the lowest you could possibly accept for it.

>I plan to sell the games that are worth more than a few bucks seperately with a BIN and free shipping. The rest of the gaming consoles and games i will sell as a bundle and maybe seperate controllers and such.

Sounds look a good plan.

>How fucked am I for selling like 100 games without going the whole business route.

You'll be totally fine, in fact you can sell millions of dollars and you never need to be a "business", you still technically must report all of the earnings on your taxes but for 100 videos games, just ignore it.

>I should be able to use media mail correct?
Video games do not qualify for media mail and media mail can legally be opened and inspected by the USPS and if they find a video game they will charge the recipient for the cost of a priority delivery upon arrival. Getting caught once isn't a big deal but if they see you doing it multiple times it is mail fraud and your ass will be blasted.

Best shipping methods? Using padded envelopes and getting label printer paper?

Use USPS First Class Package. Padded mailers are the best. For 100 games just use printer paper and tape that shit on. If you want to get clever you can get free customs envelopes to put the shipping labels in (SKU: FORM 2976-E). Some people like them, I think they take way longer.

Exactly, (related story) my mom went back home to Nigeria three months ago. lol she tried doing the usual "I'll buy these nice shoes from Goodwill and send them back home where people won't know the real value". Great plan, she even paid the barrels/shipping (hundreds of dollars), everything looked right, except she didn't execute it well. Ended up getting scammed by her own friend (lol don't laugh).

Now she's trying to bring that demographic of my country to the U.S. (I'm trying to stop her). Because selling USED shit here is really pointless (unless of course it's eBay). She wants to now buy it from Goodwill and sell it at a Flea...I'm like "mom...mom...mommy, please don't do this". Who would go to a flea and pay x2/x3 the price of something when they know a Goodwill is around the corner?!?! AND SHE'S NOT EVEN SELLING NAMEBRANDS! AHHHHHHH What's worse is she says she doesn't need my help but I know I'll be the one carrying her shit. She doesn't even know she'll need stands/signs/price tags/bags/etc. I see where I get my entrepreneurial side from now.

That being said, lol don't sell used shit unless you know fashion and know what people would buy re-used. Or you'll end up with:

I don't know...I mean if you're shipping to Russia, Stamps won't recognize the words. Also I realized the other day when this happened that the price for international was a little cheaper when I shipped through eBay/Paypal. Domestic was still 1.93/3Oz...I'm still planning on looking into it later. I heard there's more USPS programs but idk.

$16.99 a month seems cheap for the service/program so I don't mind.

I'm a member of my local hackerspace. We have two large format printers, free to use except paper (which is cheap). We have a vinyl cutter which is free to use (minus vinyl which isn't as cheap but not expensive). We have a laser cutter that is pretty cheap to use. We have a CNC router that is free to use. We have multiple 3D printers that are cheapish to use.

Plus I know a guy who is a die-maker (albeit metal but plastic is easily to a die-maker) and he could make me a custom phone shaped die for free or very cheap. Not to mention it would be of a higher quality than an AccuCut one.

There's really nothing safe. For instance, selling unlock cards is great because you will always get sales, the negative;

You can't prove that it works (well I can) but as a new seller it would be hard for eBay to believe you.

One half hour once, if you're unlucky, once you have your printer configured correctly you won't need to fuck with it again. And no logging into something else or paying a membership fee. And refunds for labels is dam easy, there's a postage label page and you can see all the postage's you've purchased recently and it'll give you options beside them.
printing a single label will be done in less than 20 seconds if you don't have any shipping option changes to make.

There are people out there that can help you get your account back.
They explicitly say to not say sorry, apologizing won't get you anywhere. Think of it as a resume, say what you'll do as a seller to make sure this never happened again, what measures you'd take in the future, how you'll improve customer satisfaction and be more professional, etc...

Buuuut, it sounds like you already used your first appeal, and you really only ever get one and one only. The people that help out in account recovery say it's pretty much a crap shoot if you fail your first appeal. Sorry mate.

Join Thrifting For Profit on Facebok, mostly Amazon sellers but a good chunk also do eBay. Big players and small players alike. They offer a lot of help and advice.

Ayy, thanks man and yea after looking into his account I see what you mean. Some of them have the real deal but toss in a few fakes since they already have so much trust.

But the Singapore thing shouldn't really be a reason since everyone mostly drop-ships nowadays (selling from a different country). lol at least he's not selling fake memory.

>how would one go about gaining a good reputation as a seller

be a good seller. This is not something someone's gonna come and tell you and you'll just kill it. But here goes something:

- know your product
- be able to answer anyone's questions immediately
- take good care of the packaging (adding a little detailt to it like a personal-looking thank you note or, if you wrap it in bubble wrap, wrap it nicely, does make a difference)
- if a buyer asks for a return, even if it's under a retarded reason, consider just accepting the return, apologize for the inconvenience and just resell your item as used or eat it. One lost item might be worth more than the negative feedback / headache of having to explain to a retard why they are wrong / headache of having to talk the retarded Indian rep into taking down the negative feedback left by that buyer.
- people don't like to be told that they are wrong, so whatever your reaction to a buyer is, always pay attention to how you're phrasing your message
- yes, there will be scammers that will just try to get one of your products for free or return without a defect on your side, and it will infuriate you how stupidly unfair eBay can be sometimes, but there will be way more honest buyers. If you have the time and willingness to fight each one, by all means go ahead, but if you're like me and don't have the time, don't let them get to you. It's fine, at most you will lose 1 out of many, many sales. Joke's on them, you're making sweet dough with this while they are going to their boring comformist job every day and their biggest achievement in the last 5 years has been getting your product for free. Congrats.
- regardless of how many here hate 99.8% Feedback, he has experience and good advice. Listen to him (I did, and I improved my sales and my time management). The zebra printer is a must if you're selling regularly.

There's much more, just try to think how you'd love to be treated as a buyer.

That depends. There is this Greek shop selling rare arthouse cinema DVD copies labelled 'Greek Promotional Copies'. His feedback rate was 98.9% and had over 298.000 sales. I bought one of his DVDs fully thinking it was legit. When I received the obvious fake copy, I immediately mailed the guy telling him he was a scammer and I wanted my money back. He offered to return 80% of the money paid and I could keep the copy which I accepted. You know why? The film was rare as fuck and I wanted to have a copy of it badly. I'm thinking of starting a small side-project selling Magic the Gathering cards (NEEEEERD). The trick will be to buy singles and sort them into decks suitable for beginners.

Should I try and cut down on my margins? I understand buying in bulk etc.

We're not too afraid to say what we sell, we're reasonably smart.

Listen to >>762501. Don't undercut, offer more value. Offer same day dispatch, advertise it as such in the description, and then comply to it. If you can offer the fastest shipping option, do it. People want to have yesterday what they bought today. They pay for this.

Price wars don't benefit neither you nor your competition, just make sure to offer safety to the buyer. This is really important, the buyer has to feel safe. For instance, offer 14 days returns due to change of mind if the item is sealed and in unused conditions (postage is on the buyer). Not only offer it, but write it down in the description. Protip: none will ever use this policy, but you're offering them safety and they trust you.

If you only have one competitor and you can make profit selling at his same price, I don't know what you're waiting for. Go and try.

If there is loads of competition, offer a rather lower price at the beginning (even if thin margins) but just to get some sales and escalate in your searches' position. Once you're on a good spot and had decent sales, normalize the price.

Also, >>762520.

The chinese buy it from the Netherlands because indeed they had a major contamination problem around a decade ago in which some chinese babies died. The company was a government company as far as I know, so now although they have certainly reformulated and it's not likely to happen again, the chinese would rather get it from safer places in Europe (NL, and Germany mainly, but also some UK).

Where I lived, they had it limited to 2 jars per supermarket, and by the time I left they had already limited it to 1 in most places. It got to a point where it was a pain in the ass, I had to go to every single supermarket and others (Kruidvat, Etos, etc) in town plus the neighbouring town to get all I needed, almost every day.

It was fine because I was a poorfag student and that paid the bills. Also my chinese friend was rich and lazy, so if you get together with someone that's more proactive you can make decent money, specially if you can buy 5 at a time. You just need the buyers.

I wouldn't go back to that now that I've started with importing and reselling, but hey, it helped me greatly during that year and a half.

Add a casual thank you note with their real name on it in every order, telling them to contact you if they had any problem at all with their product and, in the end, tell them that you're a young growing biz and that every bit of help counts, so if they liked your product and service why not take 2 secs to leave feedback. Don't sound needy.

I have feedback from 50% of my customers.

It was a joke. I buy from the Chinese.

I only have one Chinese friend though and he hates the Chinese and has no relatives in China.

Feedback is just a pain. Really the best you can hope for is to sell a lot and hope to get customers who leave it.

Honestly I find that kinda creepy, I don't exactly like it when a seller does that.
