Hey /biz/,

Do any of you work or have any information about the industry of figure making?
I'm considering using my 3D modeling skills to make some renditions of characters that are not trademarked and often disregarded, although the fans love them - local sports team's mascots, in specific.
I think there might be a business in this area, but i'm ignorant in what consists the public that buys these kind of toys. Do you have any idea what kind of research I should do before getting too invested into this?

The idea is to make these characters - antropomorphic animals in most cases, like rooster, fox, pig, etc- in a similar aesthetic as disney infinity (pic related). I think they are very commercial and can suit both child and young adult demographic.

Anyway, do you know any information that could help me out on this?

In that case, find an effective way to sell first.

At least in this case I think SEO could work since you would have many different pages, like one for each figure.

You could get links from relevant local sources. (School papers, local news sites, etc.)

Social shout outs are another channel that could work, find a popular player on one of these teams and offer a payment in exchange for a tweet or Instagram post.

The good thing is this; the mascots aren't copyrighted.
Now, maybe if I expand the thing into the soccer star's likeness, it would be more complicated in that judicial things. But that's something that can be negotiated.

The picture is what is currently being sold in the streets. It's made of plaster, has a poor paint job and no marketing at all. What i'm not sure is if the demographic that buys these characters would accept a higher price range for a better figure, with better aesthetic, better materials and maybe an official watermark of the team.

That is really cool and all, but the copyright is negotiable and by no means it states that a business like this couldn't work. It was an exemple, and not the only function.
There is also no official rendition of such mascots. The one I posted is fanmade. The official mascots is just a rooster. I cannot stress how much of an autist you would be to think they could register an entire species of animal ;)
