Popular brokers for stock trading:
Robinhood
>commission free and no minimum to open
http://www.robinhood.com

> How is it free?
Robinhood earns revenue by collecting interest on cash/securities and fees from their Robinhood Gold service

> It's been X days, why isn't my account verified yet?
Not being approved in 3 days seems to be the new norm. Nevertheless, call/email their support if you've been waiting more than that.

> When is it coming to my country?
The only "plans" are on an Australian and Chinese beta. Neither of which has gained much traction.

Interactive Brokers
>$1 commission per 100 shares. $10k minimum to open, $3k if 25 or under. Lowest margin interest. Free API access

Stocks are not an economic indicator, dummy.

This is investors reacting to changes in the borrowing environment. They're moving pieces around on the board, to reflect that. They're reacting to very strong economic news.

This isn't a reflection of the state of the economy, it's gamblers changing their bets, based on changes in the economy. If you don't understand that basic fact, you have no business posting in these threads, and you need to just stop posting, read, and try and learn something.

Not possible? Really? Not Possible?

In 2008 it went from 14000 to 7000, and many of the same problems that existed then still haven't been fixed, and a few have even been made worse.

Meanwhile, the DOW was 17,888 in the week before trump was elected.

No short of a lie you guys.

I paid off all my debt last year and started saving up $10,000 to hand over to my bank to invest for me. I'm at $9000 saved up right now.

The scary thing is my car broke down in December and I had spend $2000 dollars to fix it.

If that didn't happened I probably would have had the $10,000 saved up already and invested it all in January and probably lost everything this week.

Looks like I'm gonna hold off and see where this market bottoms out. Just keep saving up money in the mean time.

The (fairly) short answer to what's going on...

1. Housing collapse triggers great recession and nearly destroys the world.

2. Fed lowers rates to zero and pumps a shit load of money into the economy.

3. market calms down, and stocks start to rise.

4. fed is afraid to kill the recovery, so they artificially hold rates down

5. With 0% interest rates, market starts to bubble, and stock prices go up even though most americans never felt real recovery.

Fast forward to 2016-2018....

6. Stock market hitting record highs each month. Everyone knows the bubble can't last, but no one wants to miss out on profits.

7. Bubble continues, market now scared because they know rates have to go up eventually, and which point things will start to turn.

8. Floor traders holding their breath with their finger on the sell button, not wanting to leave 1 second too early, but afraid to leave 1 second too late.

9. Fed announces they will raise rates three times this year. Market starts to think it's time to pull back a little.

10. Trump SOU targets drug sellers and health companies, they do a 1 day tank.

11. This creates cascade failure where those invested in these companies have to shift out of other decent plays to cover losses.

12. Welcome back to 2009, where up/down 300 per day is normal again.

200MA works most of the time, but not ALL of the time. The system is very slow to recognize extraordinary times.

A perfect example of this is the options market. Nearly everyone in the world prices options based on the Black-Scholes model; but that model assumes that stock prices are log-normal.

But it has been proven time and time again that stocks do NOT follow log-normal pricing, which means the entire pricing model is BS.

(not to mention that they calculate volatility based on price, which means that most volatility projections are nothing more than the second derivative of a mistake)

Why is everyone here so dumb? I made $300 during market hours from buying UVXY and $700 earlier this week doing the same thing.

When the market is obviously in a correction, you obviously buy a reverse etf.

It'll be red tomorrow as well because of some of the regular non-inverse ETFs giving over negative -100% returns to people, making massive margin calls all over the place happen, both removing big buyers from stocks and causing massive selling.

expect tomorrow to be a big red day and next week to have some volatility but a general return to normalcy.

That means either sit on your hands until next week or the week after or buy into UVXY, TZA, TWIX, and or SPXS

But if you're just going to take your own advice, what's the point of asking other people's opinions?

I don't know how long GE has been on your radar, but they are in serious trouble.

They got rid of GE capital post-crash because they almost wreaked the company. But by getting ride of that, they also lost the cash-cow that was supporting the rest of the company.

So right now, they've got a shit-load of debt, and not a lot of options at this point.

They're losing money, are close to no longer being to support their dividend, and stand a good chance of being made a sacrificial lamb (in the breakup) by those who scream about the "fat cats" offloading all their bad debt into a poison spin-off.

So you might be able to make money in the short-term with it, but you really need to watch out for the day that it gaps down so much that you're trapped in the trade with no way out.

Well largely I just wanted to spark conversation about an investment I thought would be interesting rather than memeing about UVXY.

But I do agree GE capital being gone is a large negative to the company as a whole.

However, like I said, I’m mostly making a play towards a breakup. I think there’s a lot of value in their renewable energy, healthcare, power, and aircraft sectors. Individually i think each of these would be in the Fortune 500 iirc.

The largest unknown here is internally what management wants to work towards and what a potential breakup would look like. But I’m on the side of the fence that says it would be likely they breakup, and individually those companies would hold significant value.

As I mentioned earlier, there are a lot of people who have made good money by always doing the exact opposite of whatever Cramer says.

The problem with Cramer (and the same problem Maria Bartiromo used to have), is that they trade access for positive.

So in the case of Bartiromo, she used to fly on the private jets of the companies she would talk about. In the case of Cramer, he trades on-air interviews with CEO's.

But Cramer also has the problem that he too often believes everything a CEO tells him,. So if a CEO says "everything's great", he say.... "so there it is, everything is great"

This has bit him in the ass SO many times. He's pumped a number of companies based on smiles from the CEO's, only to have the company go BK or the CEO arrested later.
