Popular brokers for stock trading:
Robinhood
>commission free and no minimum to open
http://www.robinhood.com

> How is it free?
Robinhood earns revenue by collecting interest on cash/securities and fees from their Robinhood Gold service

> It's been X days, why isn't my account verified yet?
Not being approved in 3 days seems to be the new norm. Nevertheless, call/email their support if you've been waiting more than that.

> When is it coming to my country?
The only "plans" are on an Australian and Chinese beta. Neither of which has gained much traction.

My personal preferences is options. If you go out far enough, you have more time for the trade to go in the direction you want, and when the market starts going funky the price of options go up in both directions (they are also a function of volatility, which goes up when the market goes up or down by a larger amount)

In my opinion, a straight short is NEVER the best option, since it involves unlimited risk.

For example... short $FUD, and wake up to discover that an hour before market open they announce they have found the cure for the blues.

FUD gaps on open, and instead of having a $200 profit on a short, you're suddenly owing your broker $50,000, and you're getting margin calls.

At least with options, the most you can lose is everything. Not so with straight shorting.

As to your other question, yes volatility is up which raises the price of both calls or puts, but if you treat it as a binary trade, there is still money to be made, especially if you buy far enough out.

I've been buying mostly Jan 2020 options, so you don't lose on time in the near term and you still have wiggle room if you guess in the wrong direction.

You're right. Also people standing in public talking about how now is a great time to buy while wondering how they're going to keep the lights on.

Reminds me of that famous great moment in bad timing... the "Suzanne ad".

A commercial where the husband doesn't want to buy the home because he's worried about the market, but he gets nagged into it by his bitchy wife and her real estate agent.

Mind you, this ad ran just at the moment the world was collapsing

I've never had anyone sell ETFs as a hedge against losses. They're infamous for being volatile - they're losing big right now, but in recovery, they'll bounce back the fastest.

You little coinfags cant be content with the market crashing, you have to make up smug shit on top of it, right out of your ass. We'll remember that when crypto blows it's guts out again.

A reminder...

If you were trading 2006-2010, down 700 is just another day.

I would NOT be trying to catch a falling knife today.

Better To buy one minute too late than one minute too early.

If we go down tomorrow, 3-4pm is going to be interesting. A lot of people won't want to hold over the weekend.

Recessions are defined as two consecutive quarters of declining GDP. That’s about 6 months. Get out of the fast & loose crypto mindset. Call me deluded but I think this correction is gonna go much further. At the very least 22k DJI. These kinda trend changes aren't that hard to spot even for inexperienced people, I'd be surprised if a quick recovery happens any time soon

I have an exit number. We're a ways off from that. Like, not even on the horizon.

Today sucked, if I'm gonna be honest, but I peeked at my account, I'm down less than 1%. I'm more pissed at the lost growth opportunity, but once this settles back down, it's up all the way.

The only people this really hurts short term are retired people on fixed income, who need a percentage from their accounts every month, because they're getting less this month. Some of them are in trouble. Most will just have to tighten their belts, if they don't freak out and sell, which I suspect was a lot of them, today. I wouldn't even bother trying to contact my agents for a week or so, they probably have every 60-90 year old on their list yammering at them right now.

Even the crash in '29 came back fast. There's a common misperception that the crash in '29 made people homeless overnight, when it didn't - the process that led to the great depression was from a wide range of factors, factors that don't exist now. (Crop failure, farmers being foreclosed on, global slowdown, London stock market crashing hard, etc...)

Some people I listen to think the market should be at 18k. Imagine the pain from that big a crash.

But, it will come back fast. The conditions to slow down a recovery don't exist. Call me when it crashes more than 12% several days in a row, a huge drought happens in mid-America, interest rates on savings accounts are higher than the gains in the market, and the GDP is down several quarters in a row.
