Can we have a housing thread /biz/?

What’s your rent situation like? Still living with mommy? Are there any RVfags/tiny housers in here?

I just started a new job and moved into a craigslist room with 3 relatively chill, youngish roommates for $600/mo (utilities included), in the DC metro area where you will not find studio apts for less than $1200. Feels bretty comfy for now but am thinking about going even more radical to reduce costs further.

All freshman at my uni are required to live in dorms w/ a roommate. I pay just under 1k a month for pic related, but included in that is a gym, unlimited swipes at cafeteria(both the gym and cafeteria are in my building, which is nice). Plus a lot of other stuff

Between that and tuition I build that cost into my margins for my SMM and ecommerce businesses, and so far I'm debt free.

>moved into a craigslist room with 3 relatively chill, youngish roommates for $600/mo
I'm literally in the exact same boat, same amount of rent and roommies.

Just ran into a huge problem though, the roommate that actually knows the landlord is kicking me out because she's an alcoholic roastie cunt that thinks she should be able to take someone's housing so her friends can move in.

I've been looking at buying land and building a tinyhouse that will eventually be the bunkhouse for my larger house (which will be built when I have the money). Problem is the cunt wants me out by April 1st, and this project will likely take more than 2 months (or maybe not? how long does building a small house typically take?). Realistically I can tell her to fuck off, I'm protected under the state's landlord-tenant act, so the actual landlord would have to evict me through civil courts which would take a few months.

Any info on tinyhouses would be greatly appreciated. I can afford to do it if the land is around 200k. The only issue I have is how the fuck do I get electricity and water? I'd like to avoid shitting in an outhouse, showering with a bucket, and washing clothes by hand.

2 months is short for building any kind of house.

If you can secure the land, maybe you could camp on it whilst you build the house?
If you actually have a job though I would prioritise getting basics like a shower and internet up and runnning first.

An RV might be doable with a storage shed also. I have a lot of stuff.

Camping or living out of the car wouldn't be doable. I have a career that requires me to be showered, shaved, and have a clean pressed uniform. At the very least I need something with the amenities of a studio apartment, which is essentially what a tinyhouse is (and it's a fucking brilliant investment, living in a paid off studio apartment on some land while saving for enough to build a real nice house).

Realistically I can push the issue and get an additional 2, maybe 3 months. I don't think the landlord knows of her plans yet, and I don't think he'd approved of her turning his property into an alcoholics anonymous group home. This is literally what she's trying to do.

Yeah I would drag my heels and make them pay for the eviction.

I'm pretty sure the landlord would favor you over "some bitches friend" because he should be smart enough to know that friends dont pay rent all the time.

Regarding having to stay suited and booted, I guess your major problem is needing laundry and a shower. I would honestly drop a container on your land (if you can secure it in time) prioritise getting electricity and water so you can run a washer / dryer.

If you cant get water, I understand there are water truck services in the US that will deliver water to your address. You can then use an electric pump and electric shower to get you hot water.
If you cant get electricity, a generator might be an option (though it will be expensive and draw attention when running)

It would take too long to make the container habitable so I would suggest the RV option, or maybe you could camp inside the container with some sleeping bags. I would not reccomend sleeping inside a shipping container though because of the problems with CO2 or CO gas buildup.

Do research, though. There are always solutions.

Yeah I'm guessing the RV would be the only viable option, and it can be sold later. The house could be built in that timeframe but getting water and electric will likely take longer.

I'm definitely going to drag my heels but if the landlord threatens eviction I'm leaving, don't want it on my record. I don't think he will, and I think if he knew about this cunt's plan he'd flip that she's booting his most reliable tenant for someone who's probably a loser. I have every intention of fucking up her little plan, but at the same time it makes me realize I'm too old for this shit and don't want to deal with roommates anymore. what does biz think about owning large + cheap farmland that's far away from the city, while still renting a room in a inner city area with good public transport? This way you get a balance of both "extremes" - live shittily and cheaply in a work convenient area while still have plently of money left for large farmland that provide passive income (build a comfy cabin there too). When you get sick of the crowds simply drive to your acreage and recharge for a weekend.

I hear hardwood tree nurseries can be profitable since hardwood is in serious short supply practically everywhere in the world. (Nurseries may be able to be combined with animal stock nurseries to result in symbiotic relationship - tree grows quick with animals shitting there > animals take shade and shelter from trees).

Essentially the idea is to have the comfiness of owning large amount of land that produces annual income, while still living below your means in a work convenient area.

Thoughts?

if it works for you, then i'd say do it. Land is forever, man. I don't even know if you eat meat or not, but you can basically just throw a few cows in a field, moving them between paddocks every now and then, and you'll have more meat than you could eat. RVs are problematic. Where are you gonna park it? Unattended at a Walmart parking lot? It'll be broken into constantly, the types who hang around those places watch people's schedules. RV lot? They're almost as expensive as apartments. Every blog I've read about RV living is that it's not as cheap as it seems to be, and there are a lot of risks attached - they catch fire, they're not very secure, if they break down they're expensive as hell to tow and fix, and they're not designed to be lived in full time, so their materials are cheaper, and they fall apart fast.
Not to mention the fact that it's a depreciating asset the minute you buy it. Throw money away on rent, or the same money every month on a lower resale cost. Pick one.

Comfy as fuck in first solo apartment at 22. Near the beach and 10 minutes from work so no commute. Feels good.

Holy shit lol. OP here, this is actually what my younger brother basically does, that's sorta why I posted the thread. He pays no rent and basically lives in the woods wherever he goes, out of a Bivy sleeping bag to block the elements, and using some crazy wood stove heater that charges his phone. He uses an ebike to get around, charges it at libraries and starbucks and went something like 100 miles in the DC area and came back home over a few days' time.

Pic related is part of his current setup he texted me recently. His sleeping bag is in the drawstring with a couple other items; food stuff goes in the other bag, and he had a larger survival bag with some other shit, that he apparently left outside of a grocery store just the other day and got stolen, lol. Sucks for him but he said he learned from it and only lost a few nonessentials.

Single room apartment for $800 a month. About 500 sqft.
Moving to denver soon. I have about $180k saved up and i plan to maximize my tax write offs with interest payment while going to college on my gi bill.

You cant do that in a lot of locations. You would also have to foot the price of installing infrastructure.
You also lose a lot of job opportunities by living in those locations.
You end up losing dimes to save pennies.
