To understand the meaning, it's important to cross reference, read the context, or find consistency with Jesus' teachings. With that said, Jesus is basically saying everything on this Earth is temporary. This same message is reflected in Buddhism, Advaita Vedanta, Hinduism, and Eastern Teachings in general. Since things decay, changes, dies, etc. With that said, Jesus is basically saying our permanent residence and things in heaven are eternal. In the analogy, Jesus contrasts this with things that aren't permanent and decay on Earth. So what you want to do, is do things to ensure you can get to this heavenly home.
