Mainnet is literally that, a decentralized network of computers successfully using whatever token and blockchain technology and where transactions count, ie they go on the blockchain and are irreversible (as opposed to a testnet).

The tl;dr is that a company launching mainnet is them showing a working, viable product rather than just coasting on potential and hope.
