I guess keeping the idea of the site was more important than making a few dollars. I listened to his qa sessions for 7 hours straight. He said that 4chan is in an alright financial situation right now. They make enough money to run the site for the foreseeable future.

Nah, he has been planning this for a while now. The community is one of (if not) the largest on the internet and hard to confine to one space now.

He could have been loaded, but he prefers to keep the idea of anonymity and freedom of expression alive. As a result the community is in a position to pay him back for that if they feel to do so. A good reputation and staying true to original ideals may be a better ROI than selling out for shekels.
