because its not profitable for certain people to mine. Mining is evolving to the point where you might as well cloud mine and let the pro's handle all the logistics.

Price drop is squeezing a lot of miners out which is why the diff dropped. Bitcoin is great its just that certain miners can't hang anymore.

I highly doubt it will EVER cross into the $100k+ area. However, it is extremely likely that 1 BTC will be trading for over $5k in 2-3 years. $10k-$25k is very realistic if looking at a decade from now as well. However, that's also with the assumption that some other crypto coin doesn't become more popular.

Alt coins are the way to go now for that reason. Pic related is the one I'm heavily invested into now - cryptocurrency for the purpose of buying and selling nootropics/modafinil online. Not quite dark-market, and very lucrative IMO.

It's on Bittrex and averages over 30 bitcoin's-worth every day. If you have a little bitcoin that isn't stowed away, IMHO buying into Noocoin today could easily net you back 300%+ bitcoin by the middle of January, as the shipment service is still newly launched and word has not yet spread.

Using it as a retirement fund is indeed idiotic.

However, using it as "quick money" by trading swings is arguably just as idiotic. It's far too volatile right now to be considered a viable means of daytrade income.

Use it as a mid-term investment. I.e. buy a handfull now while it is at nearly a yearly lowpoint and hold for a couple of years for a very decent return while keeping an eye out for any potential killer competitors.

http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2014-12-23/and-2014s-worst-currency-wasbitcoin

"Bitcoin is second only to gold on the list of topics guaranteed to arouse the wrath of the Internet trolls. Yet relentless promotion can't hide these facts: The digital currency peaked at a value of $1,130 just over a year ago. Its plunge of more than 56 percent in 2014 makes it the world's worst performing currency this year, according to Bloomberg, which tracks 175 foreign-exchange values:

"... Most of Bitcoin's supporters, meanwhile, seem to be hackers whose resources depend upon the Ponzi-scheme nature of the enterprise itself."
****************

This board is such shit for actual business and investment that I haven't been here in nearly a year. But I knew there would be some shill pushing btc, and I had to come back to link this.

I'm pretty sure the board now acts as a online street corner for a few con men to haunt everyday peddling this garbage.

There is never any end of long winded, open ended, circuitous full throttle sales pitches that basically seem oriented at dispelling the daily emergence of common sense epiphanies that it's shit, with all the subtlety of a used car salesman that just got his 24 notice from his bookie.

>> No.595962

>>595958

That article you quoted is just flat out moronic, though.

I've read shitloads of articles of people explaining why they believe bitcoin is bad, and a good amount of them are due to the author not really understanding what it is or how it works. I.e. "seem to be hackers whose resources...." - that doesn't even make sense. Like, at all.

I remember some Washington Post article about how Bitcoin is doomed because once the value gets over a certain amount, the US government will "take over full control of the network and/or the internet hosting center of bitcoin" or something like that - when that's not even physically possible due it the blockchain not even working that way.

I've read a lot of articles that sounded far less informed than the one you quoted, for sure, but that last quip there does totally reveal how much the author actually knows about the technology as a whole... and it isn't a whole lot.

You can't buy btc. You can only give away money for the chance to watch an imaginary digital toy rise or fall in imaginary value. The word "buy" implies a transaction or exchange. There is no exchange, it's just a donation to a broken concept.

Unless you were able and did indeed cash out and hold actual money or something of value, no one makes actual money from this. Its not a currency exchange, its a perversion of it based on all the worse aspects of any currency.

It was a great but incomplete idea. I wish any VC the best, but at present, it simply doesn't have a workable future.

I can sell raffle tickets printed on from my computer and peddle the hope that the buyer will get rich. I would have cash in my pockets but that doesnt mean the buyer is holding anything but hope and a worthless piece of paper.

>> No.595967

>>595966
>There is no exchange

That's incorrect, though. This is exactly why people who say bitcoin is a ponzi-scheme either don't understand what a bitcoin in your wallet is, or at the very least don't understand what a ponzi scheme is.

>> No.595973

>>595962

I admit, it lacks inclusive circumspection. I also admit that it is too easy to bash VC with blind negative assumptions and small minded pessimism.

I would love to see a working VC free from the problems that plague the current models. And to be fair, btc could be that. But if nothing else, it is going to continue to get a self fulfilling bad rap by people who peddle it as the next great investment.

I would also concede that if it enjoyed ubiquitous access to actual cash exchange, it would do a lot better. My biggest perturbation with the concept is how in the future, it will escape the FTC/IRS at exit points.

I wouldn't want to 'get rich' from it. But I would like a reasonable bottom, because unless it finds one, I could be burning cash every time I 'buy' it.

For example, I wouldn't want to tie up holdings in a vehicle that can increase 300% either if it is unstable. Because that means that at that rate, I can lose a lot of value also when it drops again. Either it is a currency or it isn't.

It's not a comfort to buy at 1$ and "make" 10$ if I then have to buy at 10$ and watch it drop to a dollar again. I don't know what that is, but it's nothing I would call a useful currency. Bloomberg is right about one thing; I would feel better with rubles. Even Icelandic krona or Argentine dollars at this point.

But then to be fair, I am one of 'those people' waiting for the Eurozone to collapse also, so I admit I am sort of an oddball in that respect, to disclose whence my views emanate.

Bitcoin analytic here:

I can say that the latest down movement below $280 broke a serious support level that held for months.

This means that more downward movement is now highly possible especially since we are currently moving closer and closer together for a massive breakout.

I would believe the breakout to be bearish, but the real mover is still going to be mass media for now. And the fact that most traders are most likely seeing a good entry point for a long position.

tl;dr might go lower some more, but the year 2015 should bring the price back UP TO $700 realistically. Everything above that should be considered magic.

GONNA LAY DOWN SOME TRUTHS, GUYS:

It will not go to zero; at some point there exists a bottom, due to the following:

> Bitcoin *is* being used for trade, especially among hacker types and geeks and online pharmacies and many other "grey areas"...
> Many bitcoin related apps (some killer?) are being built. Open Bazaar and others (do you realise how big an Ebay with close to zero fees could be?), gambling, tipping, revenue sharing.

The two points above prevent the price dropping to zero. After reaching a certain price, the only way is up. I say this with full confidence; the apps and services listed above (among with many others) are going to grow massively.

The only question is, where is this bottom?

Are we at it now?

Or is it much further down, $100? $10? $1?

Yes, the price can continue down. It can go down a LOT. But at some point, there is a bottom (well, plus some buffer of speculation, above which we bounce around). And when that is reached, the trend will reverse, and the price will begin slowly increasing again.

In the long term, the price *will* trend upwards again. How low will it go before that, decide for yourself.

>protip: nothing

Btc is popular, useable and most reliable of all crypto currencies. He won't drop to 0 now, that's simply not possible. It can hit 100$, 10$, 1$ but not 0. Sooner or later, its worth will again ridiculously skyrocket thanks to crime exchanges like Mt.Gox and together with it ltc will rise again (50$ for 1ltc is pretty probable, since it was worth much during last BTC bubble).

Invest into ltc when it will be below 1$ and in a year you will be rich. Not a millionaire, but investing 1k$ will gain you 80k$ - that cash is not walking down the streets nowadays.

Fuck, MtGox head alone was an international felon with several charges of fraud on him.

There was an attempt to make Buttcoin a legitimate currency, an effort in which hundreds of hipsters helped, and hilariously reddit as well, and it gets better because Dogecoin might actually be safer, and better than bitcoin in the long run, but no one here will openly admit at looking at the darned thing seriously because well... fuck reddit.

As far crypto bullshit goes, riptide might be a safe bet, but a really safe bet, with any luck it might become the next paypal, unless the creator and managers die from boredom first.

this is a script that runs martingale on freebit.co

If you have around 50000 satoshi it'll just keep earning you about 1000 per hour or more, and then when you have enough you can up the original bet to .00000002 and just keep going from there.

Do some basic calculation and just make sure you can lose around a couple dozen times in a row and still cover your bets.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martingale_%28betting_system%29

that's a link to the martingale system wikipedia article. that way you understand how it works. basically you just double your bets if you lose and eventually you'll make back your investment plus whatever your original bet is.

So it just goes up and up. Automatically. You have to refresh it every hour cuz of how the site works but it's just foolproof as long as you can cover about two dozen iterations of losses. You'll never lose that many times in a row. Especially if you refresh your seed, under the "Provably Fair" section.

Trust me on this, make sure you can cover a shitload of losses. I've lost 13 times n a row and lost a lot, so just don't be greedy and don't up your initial bet value until you can realistically cover it. I did this a couple times and lost a large amount of winnings. Essentially "turn it up to 11!" is not applicable until you have a shitton. But yeah have fun it's a slow and steady wins the race formula that's essentially foolproof as long as you're smart about it.

Well, it's only been a year to be fair. It COULD see an xbox-hueg breakout.
But then again, trading litecoin is probably the smarter move at this stage, largely because smaller price movements are required for a usable percentage, and people who had spent 1000 dollars on LTC in say, June before the bubble and sold during the bubble made more than people who had bought 1000 dollars worth of BTC in that same time frame.

Bitcoin was good at first because it was a bunch of libertarian types that wanted a currency free from government interference. Once people started to get rich from it though it ended up being filled to the brim with speculators who were buying bitcoin for NO REASON other than to later sell bitcoin.

Now that bitcoin is falling so much all these people will start getting out. I do think bitcoin has a price floor, but it's going to get much lower before it gets higher.

the under-the-hood technical stuff is too much for me, but all it really needs to do is to offer what bitcoin does, but anonymously. with bitcoin all transactions and balances are immediately and permanently visible to everyone, which is a nightmare for the billion dollar markets selling illegal shit. lots of devs are attempting to create an anonymous version of bitcoin, xmr is presently amongst the most respected, and having been attacked some months ago it also happens to be one of the cheaper coins. it has now recovered, and it's price is up about 25% from last month.
