Yes! Are there any better majors?

Make sure you take up some Internships along the way at Uni.

You're fucked without them in any STEM field

>> No.591290

>>591257

Ignore this moron. Interships count for jack unless the job app is with the company you DID the internship with.

ChemEng, just graduated two years ago, at 105k debottlenecking processes at an industrial bakery.

Pick a campus club, and do it to the nines, get some kind of state or regional recognition, and youre made. I did Chem-E-Car and won a regional, that goes off better with companies more than either of the internships I did.

>Im studying Biology.

lol

if you want 80k starting from undergrad Bio isn't the way to go. Most people who do bio are aiming for med school, or a phd. An undergraduate degree alone isn't enough for bio to find a high paying job, unless you are very well connected or you switch over to another industry (i.e doing equity research and specializing in biotech companies)

how is physics?

>> No.591597

Don't start cheering until you get to Junior year. You have to pass all the math and physics classes. I wouldn't even worry about the grades.

There's some truth to this. Employers want to know that you're capable. Having a working portfolio and awards are an excellent way to portray this.

I wrote the following in another post:
--------------------------
Why don't you /biz/nessmen with technical degrees list your portfolio or links to projects you've done on your resume? When I graduated with my MS in CS, the only sections on my resume were "Education" and "Portfolio", and the portfolio sections had descriptions of 8 major class and personal projects I had completed with links to the working thing, descriptions, and technologies used for said project. I didn't even bother putting a work history section since it was all irrelevant service sector work and it didn't fit anyway (resume took 2 full pages which was mostly my portfolio). With custom cover letters, this netted me several interviews (and job offers) with companies in my area. I'll admit though that my personal projects in particular were quite advanced compared to the average CS graduate from my school so that could have made me stand out. But I still think you're selling yourself short if you don't at least link to a webpage or something that showcases your work (program executables, program source code, CAD files, or whatever types of files an employer in your field would be interested in seeing).

The only people I know who come out of college immediately to jobs in the 80-90 range are petro/chemE and that's in the best possible circumstances. I don't actually know anyone personally who made that much or will make that much when school ends.

Considering my dirt cheap cost of living, I'm making bank.

>> No.591769

Is it even worth it doing petrochem eng?
What's the income like after five years of experience?
Is the "ceiling" as high as in tech or finance?

>> No.591792

That whole "STEM master race 100k starting" bullshit is just that: bullshit.

Unless you have connections, get lucky, and land yourself a job with a risk management/investment company (ie 60-80 hour work weeks), you will not be earning anywhere near that much.

Good luck getting internships if you aren't a woman or a minority, or if you have a GPA below 3.6. Btw, if you're at a school worth even half a shit, getting a 3.6 is going to be balls ass hard, and this is coming from a fucking genius. My "normal" friends are barely scraping by with 2.5s or so.

But to answer your question: generally speaking, no. STEM is objectively the best for quick success.

unless you have a very gifted mind and started doing research in school, expect unemployment unless you get into med school/pharmacy/ switch into biochemical engineering/ grad school/5 years experience(they always choose people with tonnes of exp).
i know many people with bachelors in bio who make slightly more than mcdicks workers.

the ceiling is very high but at the moment petrol prices have plunged so you won't get $300k starting

the ceiling in finance is low if you intend to always work for other people

someone genuinely talented in tech can earn a lot, I mean someone who has been programming since the age of 14 or something, a run of the mill computer science student will have to get used to sucking on the end of 15 inch negro dicks in order to get an unpaid internship and after they have their precious experience and no gaps in their resume they will get an ordinary office job

if you really want to earn $80k+ starting, get one of those biohazard cleanup jobs or try your hand at selling counterfeit goods

>> No.591860

>>591792
so if you're at a school not worth half a shit and getting a 3.6 is easy so you get internships, what exactly is the point in going to a school worth half a shit, genius?

maybe you just can't get an internship because you're an autist?

Bio grad here. Finished school last year. I never received any job offers from any science-related positions. For me, most jobs were concentrated at universities / research centers, oil & gas, and environmental / testing companies (FEW OF WHICH NEEDED A BACHELORS DEGREE). Good luck you poor bastard.

I'll be going into college next year and most likely will get my first choice for engineering. The school is recognized as the best in the country for engineering (although an institute of technology).
