Can you explain what the "illegal" angle is? Like why are these guys going to coinbase at all. Are they moving crypto from a wallet onto CB so that they can do tons of trading with no fees? But then they've got to realize they can't cash out fiat from coinbase unless they have a legit account right? I never use coinbase except to shift USD into crypto, and it's never been a problem for me. But I've never tried to cash out USD into my linked bank account in the order of 100k-1m. You can see how these posts are scary because of course coinbase wouldn't want to pay out millions because I've made it big trading elsewhere and simply use their service as an offramp. I learned never to use coinbase when I had their debit card. I made a pretty big purchase and they decided they were going to withhold the rewards for no reason. This was my biggest purchase with the card. Support claimed they couldn't help me no matter which support option I chose. The debit card team themselves claimed they couldn't help me with debit card rewards. After being given the run around with support for a couple weeks I closed my account. They stole $25 from me

On asian exchanges a lot of shitskins and jeets were complaining about having similar problems.

These exchanges are constantly on edge because of overbearing regulatory enforcement so they try and keep everything they can above board. What they can't they ignore as much as possible. Fucking idiots will use fake identities in US exchanges and eventually realize they want to cash out to buy a car or house at which point everything goes to shit.

I remember reading this reddit post that detailed this fucker who used a fake identity to buy a shit ton of btc early on binance and eventually realized he wanted to buy a house and start a business. So initially he had moved it all to a cold storage wallet, but when he was ready to cash out he moved it all to coinbase under his real name. So from coinbases perspective there is a fresh account that just got a huge inflow of money worth ~1mil. They have no idea what is going on and they just see that the money was sent to the wallet originally from a binance account. So they asked him for any proof of purchase and the guy provided all the bank receipts he could. He then showed he deposited money into the exchange, but he couldn't get access to the binance account trades so corroborate the purchases because binance banned his account. If in the end it turned out he actually didn't sell any quantities and what not then cool, but I mean what the fuck is Coinbase to do with retards like this? I mean I can't come up with a resolution right now myself, so its no wonder Coinbase ends up having people like this on hold for months if not years.

Unironically Chainlink connecting centralized exchange ledgers fixes this. Probably never gonna happen desu.

Also, you're wrong in assuming that Coinbase wouldn't want to help people cash out after trading elsewhere when applicable. Part of their entire business strategy is to make money on crypto purchases and sales. If someone comes in and wants to sell $1mil+ in btc they will instantly make money on that exchange as they force the seller to sell the btc at a discount in exchange for providing the service.

The problem is idiots who don't know how to handle money properly. That is literally it. They do dumb shit, it looks shady, and they didn't keep proper documentation they get fucked in limbo.

Put the account in withdraw mode, not lock and essentially steal his funds. 2 wrongs don't make a right. I remember some dude here opened a binance account with a fake identity and then had an issue with his account and after contacting support, support required verification of his identity and he was shit out of luck, 45K Link locked on Binance.
