The news seems to be scratching their head around what is happening with this stock so let me break this down as simple as possible.

There are large long positions, millions of shares, that lend their shares to shorts. The long positions must get back their shares when their contract ends. Meaning that the shorts must close before the long can roll over it's new contract. When the shorts close and the contract rolls over, and it's always at 4am, the share price doubles until market open when new shorts are opened and the share price tanks. Investors have figured this out and bid up the stock the night before a roll over which causes a huge spike and eats into the profits of shorts by increasing their cost to borrow.
