Normies don't know it as apu, but on imageboards that's what it was known as since it was created by a fin in the style of spurdo.

Most people didn't know pepe as pepe until much later on. When pepe was first created it was just known as the sad frog or feelsbadman frog, it only became pepe after the smug variant came out.
