Let’s say you invest 500M $ on shares and this buys you 20M shares at an average price of 25$
This price action might well move the price from 20$ to 30$, so if you bought 100M $ in calls (let’s say at 5$ per share) it would be giving you a profit of 5$/share, or an extra 100M $ (locating another 20M shares in the process).

Ex: I buy 1 $20c for June 21st for a $1 (ie. $100 because 100 shares per call) premium. On that day, the stock is trading at $100 and I choose to excercise.

My overall cost is then $20*100 shares + $100 premium.

If the price is below $20 on that day, then my option is worthless.

If you want to excercise that option you’d have to spend 2000$, or if you prefer you can ask the counterparty to pay the difference in cash. However if you ask for the shares they’re legally required to provide them.
What can also happen is that if you have 2 calls you can exercise one and get the cash from the other, so the second call is giving you the money to exercise the first one.
This is why market makers sell calls without having the shares in full but hedge their calls, as in this case the seller only needed 100 shares and not 200, and holding an extra 100 shares when it’s not needed it’s risky.
But MOASS is riskier too, so if someone bought with the intention of exercising some fireworks can happen, especially as hedging is the reason why the gamma ramp is important.
With that said I wouldn’t touch options with a 10 foot pole tho, as they are way more illiquid and buying/selling them has a lot bigger spread than shares, and their intrinsic time restriction makes it a way bigger risk than buying and holding (and the hedge funds survive by pocketing the premiums of calls until they are not able to satisfy their obligation, so if things go south me as a literal who have no recourse, while a big fund or the company itself can sue their ass if they don’t deliver)
