/crickets

So the jannies drove off the ordinary investor-posters because they were tired of doing their fucking jobs, and now that they have relented things are five times worse. Old /biz/ was 60-70% crypto bullshit, but there was a healthy interchange of opinion and information re: precious metals, commodities, stocks, etc., and we'd have several new SMG's each morning. Now it's 95% crypto bullshit and an SMG lasts a week.

I agree with this anon, the money printers injected so much fiat into the system your not seeing stocks go up in real nominal terms, its only inflating because the dollar is worth less.

The stock market cannot drop because it has already effectively crashed 50% due to inflation alone, thus buying is the only remaining alternative unfortunately despite the 'high' perceived prices. Had you followed my advice a few months ago, you would be up 30-50%

I fundamentally do not understand what determines a stock price.
I think I understand that a company's increasing/decreasing profitability makes the price go up or down, but I don't know what sets the price to begin with.
Stocks seem to me like glorified baseball cards. I don't actually "do anything" with them. I just buy and sell them. I guess they "give you a share of ownership in a company" and the ability to vote, but both those things are largely meaningless, no? Like, the average shareholder will never have any say in the company's operations.
I guess I just don't get stocks. I buy and sell them and I do pretty well. But I basically only speculate on price movement. All my estimation regarding price movement is relative to its current position - I couldn't truly tell you whether it's current price is fair or not.
Anyone have any insight on this they'd like to share?

think of it like a fractional loan system.

People need money to do business stuff, the sell shares to generate that money, and people give them said money in the hopes of getting a return.

Main difference being that a loan has a set rate/default is possible, where as stocks can go up or down, so if it helps to think of stocks as a sort of loan maybe that helps?

I contemplate that, but I won't argue that I'm in the 1st pctl for intelligence.
It just seems sort of bizarre, taking NVDA as a primary example. It seems they have a minimal dividend. People are paying close to 1k per share. Sure NVDA is highly profitable, but they don't get any of that profit. The shareholders just have their share(s) to sell to other people who might want them.

OHH but on the flip side, if you buy all the shares you get the company.... Maybe that's where this works out. Like, at the current stock price it costs 2T to buy Nvda. Maybe that sort of makes sense from a more grounded sort of financial aspect. I need to nap on it.

Basically I just started getting into the market and I needed to make some quick buck immediately, no time to study and get a degree. I'm not retarded and worked in tech so I know to read graphs and I noticed patterns but somehow yesterday everything was outside my predictions. I am mad because I lost 10% of the capital I put aside for trading but I'm even more mad because I missed the BNED opening spike to answer a phone call of a friend who just needed to bitch about some slut he's hitting on and he's that kind of friend who whenever I tell him about getting into trtading he goes like "nah it's like gacha dude you need a proper job, open a business like a bakery or a restaurant or something, you never gonna make it" basically never encourages me and naturally he's not willing to pay the restaurant's rent for me, nor the furniture, or cover for losses if it goes bad because as if there aren't already 10 restaurants per square kilometer. Anyways, how comes the market started acting so random yesterday? did I miss any news? How much are you actually putting into this? the margin seems a little low and 20 minutes ago was a better time from what I see.

>> No.58520765

I mean you would have needed to have invested 10k or more 20 minutes ago to have been able to make 100 USD out of NVDA. Does anyone here have that kind of capital even? and 100 is basically nothing and this is assuming the price stays stable (which is not the case since it already dropped while I was writing this). This excluding commissions as well.

If an option expires today is it processed with respect to the price when the market closed or if it moves in the post market does that affect the exercise outcome?

I sold some cash secured puts, they expire(d) today. At 4pm the stock price was just below the strike, in the post market the price has gone up beyond the strike price. If the puts stay OTM until tomorrow, should I expect the shares in my account or not?

>> No.58524171

>>58524025
When the market closed.

>In this market, the last available price of the underlier, which is used to determine whether an option is automatically exercised, is the price of the regular-hours trade reported last to the Options Clearing Corporation at or before 4:01:30 pm ET on the Friday before expiration. This trade will have occurred during normal hours, i.e. before 4:00 pm. It can be any size and come from any participating exchange. The OCC reports this price tentatively at 4:15 pm, but, to allow time for exchanges to correct errors the OCC does not make the price official until 5:30 pm

Don't let your options expire. It's often very high risk as you will need to buy at the price the next following trading day and afterhours/premarket could shift the price significantly and fuck you in the ass.

>> No.58524187

>>58524025

Interesting, so the strike price of the options contract doesn't protect me from price movements in the after market, or at least up until 1.5 hours after close?

I'll have to check some of my past options expirations, I mostly sell far OTM covered calls and most of the time I roll them on Fridays. For these cash secured puts I was willing to purchase the shares at that strike price but wanted to get some experience with puts, this is the first time I've experienced aftermarket movement of one of my options go from ITM to OTM.

>> No.58524383

Listen to me. That is family money, and you are the conservator. Your primary concern is to PRESERVE THE PRINCIPAL -- in other words, the money itself. That means Treasury bills, which will net you 5.26% annualized for a 90-day T-bill. I understand there is something called a Euro-Treasury that pays a bit less, but you won't get reamed by exchange rates. Take multiple overlapping short term T-bills so that one is always coming due every month or two. That will give you the rate of return you are looking for, but over time the principal will shrink due to inflation.

Take perhaps 20% of the total and designate it as your investment capital; that is the safe old stodgy rule. Put half of it in a good mutual fund; I have had good luck with PRWAX. The other half you can average into said mutual fund or fart around with individual stocks. Applied Materials is good right now. So is McKesson, which manufactures more pharmaceuticals than God and has shown itself to be very stable.

Don't quit your job. Don't gamble. Don't invest in things you don't understand or dabble in day trading. I got a fraction of what you did from my grandmother and by being very very careful I was able to grow it into a fair-sized nest egg. Good luck.

After news sites started catching up, I came across this article: https://investorplace.com/2024/05/why-is-verastem-vstm-stock-down-62-today/

>The company is conducting a Phase 1/2 clinical trial of avutometinib plus defactinib in combination with gemcitabine and Nab-paclitaxel. The results were positive and that initially saw VSTM stock rally higher this morning. However, investors quickly noticed the safety data included in these results. 12 patients in the trial suffered from emergent serious adverse events. That includes 11 with grade ≥3 events. Among these were blood bilirubin increase, biliary obstruction, febrile neutropenia, pulmonary embolism, sepsis, anaemia, pneumoperitoneum, septic shock, skin infection and more.

It's a risky treatment, most likely because it's still in the early stages and needs to be tweaked through more clinical trials but at the current stage of development you gotta weigh the risk of running into any of the side effects above vs the results it can shows on the cancer. I didn't mention my personal experience to avoid dox but my mom actually died from cancer, the best oncology department of my state tested a new medicine on her which didn't have any positive results but it cost her several days spent going through the therapy anyways, she could've spent those days home in peace or on vacation since her death was inevitable. So much time spent just traveling from home to the hospital almost every day and several hours a day spent sleeping on the hospital bed during the therapy, all precious time that could be spent differently. What's worse it was during the quarantine and relatives weren't even allowed to accompany the patients inside the department. When the doctors realized nothing could be done and she was discharged, she was already on the verge of death, in facts she died home less than a week later. If a relative or family member of yours is going through cancer, I wish you the best of luck.
