They probably use it pay off the property tax, HOA expenses, maintenance etc.

From what I know renting homes isn't about profiting off the rent itself, this would be moronic as you can get one-shot by a massive maintenance bill if you don't have funds saved up for it.

It's about having an asset that rises in value over time which you can do reverse mortgages on etc. if you need liquidity or simply just due to value appreciation over time, and there not being taxation on the sale of the property.
