Professional writers (or people who have taken a lot of formal writing classes) do this when they're drafting to make the rhythm more clear. When these people post to reddit the markdown renderer ignores it so the lines get bunched into normal paragraphs. Since they keep the habit even after being here for a while they stand out.

Paragraph spacing is normal and something anyone at least moderately literate will and has done anywhere for longer than we've had computers.
