Based on terms I've heard bantied about, there have to be costs for a sculptor to make the die, and you have to hire a mint to make the things, pay them to ship, and you have to of course pay for the silver plancets.
Then you have to divide those costs across the number of rounds you sell. For small mintages (Yotsuba was the only one to break 1000), that means higher costs per. And of course, the number of hours put into designing, negotiating, tracking buyers, generating labels, receipts, buying packaging (which also have to be bought), and going to the PO to ship (that can be free, but why)?
So yeah, they were pricey, but not outrageously so.
Anyone can do it... few do. There are reasons.
