In terms of gold, you want highly liquid relatively smaller denominations like 1 oz American gold eagles, Canadian Maples, Krugerrands, etc from reputable dealers.

Don't fall for the graded scams or big bars. Bars are cheaper by volume but also a lot harder to verify, move, and sell.
