I genuinely don't. I make about 30% of my income from my job and 70% from dividends, but I haven't quit. I'm really not sure what to do at this point. On one hand, I like the prestige associated with working in finance. I like being able to tell people I work in finance. On the other hand, everyone I know in finance seems to be working purely to make as much as I already have so they can quit.

So I'm torn. I've considered trying to start my own hedge fund or something so I can still "work in finance" while not really working, but it seems like a lot of money and time for just a title that won't actually change my net worth much.

I spent over 4 hours just scrolling LinkedIn looking at every contact I've ever met growing up to see if my salary and net worth is (likely) more than them and feeling insecure about the whole thing.

Don't worry so much about what you SHOULD do, and just do what you want. If you want to keep going to work and you enjoy it and you have time to do what you like and it boosts your confidence, that's okay.

I have a wife and kid, thankfully. I can understand the importance of what you've said here. I just have episodes of insecurity(?) looking at my old classmates. It's part of the fact that I went to a very good university but I had no clue how to properly build connections with people or network in college so I may as well have gone to an average school, and when I look up the jobs of people I used to go to university with, they're all high level IB positions or similar. I'm simply a consultant. I do work in finance but it's not the best. So I wonder if I should try to switch careers by getting an MBA and do all that work, or simply call it quits with a few million dollars and a house, wife, and kids. Maybe I got issues, I don't know.

Why not reconnect with your old classmates? Meet up for coffee, just ask how their life is going? You probably have vacation time you're not using, take them out to lunch.

Networking isn't like an interview or horse trading. It's just hanging out every now and then and being an occasional presence in others' lives, so that when an opportunity arises, they mention it to you. And if you have an opportunity, you can share that with them too.

Plus once you hear them bitch about trouble at work you won't feel so insecure. Right now you're only seeing the polished image they choose to put out into the world on social media. Not their ongoing feud with Barbara in another department who keeps fucking them over.

I do, I have so much vacation time. I've taken like 2 weeks off total for the past 4 years. I've just been so nervous about reaching out for the past 10 years I never did, and now they're mostly married and all that. I was even afraid Facebook contacts who have forgotten about me would see a message from me, remember we're still connected, and then delete me from their contacts. But I started making a list 2 weeks ago of the contacts I would actually really like to see again. I would love to see them again. I'm going to try and reach out to them next month, due to a work project. But at least I'm going to try and put myself out there again.
