Really? That's the opposite of all the recent news I've been reading. If not the ETFs, then what's driving the recent price surge? both are true.

the recent price surge is because of the ETF's,
AND it will go MUCH higher if it proves itself to be safe and accessible.

It jumped because a few million investors dropped a few hundred or a few thousand they don't care about into it. Imagine if it was trusted and a significant fraction of every retirement account. It could very well moon in a way that makes the current gains look like nothing.

The difference is gold has been around forever. It's a known asset. We know pretty much what gold should do..

crypo is in its infancy still, and a fairly crude investment vehicle. It has much more room for growth. Gold is widely adopted and always has been. Crypto is still relatively untrusted and unknown.

They both can't be true, and everything I've been reading says that normies are buying bitcoin ETFs. Markets are moving and it seems like gold (and bitcoin) will see new ATHs this year. That is a big deal, and I'm not sure what you're trying to say by poo pooing these things.

>> No.57863399

a few million investors tossing pocket change into an ETF is not most investors.

right? The public in general hasn't bought into crypto. Even those that have are putting a tiny fraction of their money in.

and it's making huge gains off that tiny fraction of investors putting a tiny fraction of their money in.

imagine if most investors bought in. Or used more of their money to buy crypto.

>I'm not sure what you're trying to say by poo pooing these things.
I'm saying it has the potential to go thousands of times higher if investors actually trust it. Not a 2x or a 4x, but 1000's of times.

I think gold has some catching up to do still after inflation rates in 2020-23. I expect it to hit $2500 this year and perhaps end the year close to $2800. But I'm not a fortune teller, and what I expect might be dead wrong. I've been expecting gold to break $2k and stay up for 3 years now and I was wrong.

>> No.57863541

>>57863473
I think we could see $2,500 gold this year. I'd be surprised if it gets up to $2,800 this year though, simply because it seems to move so slowly. Plus, if normies begin flocking into crypto ETFs, that would surely have some negative pressure on the spot price, no? Or is the gold price overwhelmingly dictated by central banks?

Also as far as investors are concerned, gold is still the opposite of crypto.
Gold is an extremely low-risk hedge
Crypto is an extremely high risk bet

so more people going into crypto could in fact raise gold investments. As a hedge and counterbalance to crypto risk.

>people going into crypto could in fact raise gold investments. As a hedge and counterbalance to crypto risk
That would be interesting combo, but I could see it. I wonder if the sentiment of bitcoin being a bet will shift though now that it's been legitimized with ETFs. Even Larry Fink described bitcoin a "flight to quality", but maybe he was just trying to drum up hype for his new ETF offering.

>> No.57863718

>>57863662
>I wonder if the sentiment of bitcoin being a bet will shift though now that it's been legitimized with ETFs.
The biggest problems I hear from naive investors is that crypto can be easily hacked, lost, or the exchanges go down. Also it's highly volatile. If those problems don't arise in the next few years people are likely to put more money into crypto. So I think it comes down to how well the ETF's are managed. They do a good job with them and I could see a lot more investors buying in big.

some of those same risks apply to gold funds and warehouses as well. There is concern in holding paper gold simply because lots of people have gotten scammed over the years.

Yes. I don't own any because I'm way too old to be sticking money into high-risk stuff. But I expect both BTC and ETH could go a lot higher over the next decade if the ETF's catch on and interest continues to grow.

I'm bullish on metals too, but in that case it's not so much that I expect metals to rise in value, but that the dollar will continue to decline via inflation.

I would drop my pants and ejaculate all over it so my genetic material would be forever preserved in some museum or private collection somewhere. Then I'd take GPS coords so I can claim or buy the land I found it on. After that I'd show /pmg/ pics of the nugger and sell it because I'm not installing a fricken vault in my house for one rock.

Gah!!
I'll confess to some curiosity myself, but... NO. It's tiny enough as-is: 9.5 g, about the size of a navy bean.
I'm going to have to reshoot this too. That stuff that looks like hair at top left and top middle-right turns out it was some tape goo with dirt in it. Didn't see it until that picture, but now it's cleaned off.

The banks are going to forcefully revalue PMs higher to make the current debts more sustainable just like they did in the 1930s. They were fighting deflation so hard during the great depression they literally just revalued gold and it pulled all asset prices higher. Much to the dismay of anyone holding cash. (This happened years after the debt/leverage crash of 1929).
So be ready for the long-haul. And that is also not to say that the derivatives bubble could crash this thing overnight and not be as long and drawn out.
Tangible wealth and REAL capital will save your ass. No one in the breadlines owned a backhoe or a factory. And not everyone was necessarily bad off as others during that period.
Stocks that own capital assets are also likely so overleveraged that they may still survive the deleveraged-event, but you sometimes buy literal pennies on the dollar worth of value because they are all overbought with borrowed money. People sitting on stacks of PMs will do handsomely.

Look up your regional geology, then look for areas with historic gold mining. You dont need to break the bank on kit, a simple plastic or steel gold pan with aggressive riffles will work. A good shovel and pick is all you need to dig, but if your in areas with exposed bedrock a sniping kit for getting down deep into cracks is a must as well. You can find gold everywhere, but usually not in worthwhile quantities. Anywhere scoured by glaciers should have at least a little flour gold, I found this in a creek in central Illinois and know that occasional strikes of auriferous glacial black sands have been mined in Iowa and around the Great Lakes. You can see here, for instance, the butterknife has the same square pattern at the top of the handle. All the pieces have the widened base with square bottoms as well.

I've been here almost 4 years preaching the gospel of cheapies, awesome deals aren't common but I've bought lots of stuff for less than $1/ozt asw. Not the cheapest but one of my favorites was this huge 954g sterling bowl for $4.24 with tax from a Goodwill. Got a 1,160g german .800 platter for $4.24 at the same location a year earlier and consistently get cheap silver and gold jewelry there too. My local Goodwill is way better than most so your best bet is estate sales, monitor www.estatesales.net and start slurping.

Investing in anything isn't a normal behavior. Most people don't invest. Of those that do, stocks and maybe bonds in their retirement account is the usual.

crypto is no secret, just like PM's are no secret. But to imagine most people care about crypto or metals requires a wild stretch of the imagination that comes from hanging out on /biz/ all day every day. If you talk to actual humans in real life you'll find almost none of them have crypto or precious metals, and almost none of them want to own either asset class.

I love hunting for gold and silver, but it's a bit like playing D&D or something. Weird, and hard to find friends with similar interests. Crypto has an even smaller fan base in real life.

>> No.57875441

It's neat! I have a couple platinum coins and I especially like my platinum jewelry, but I don't think it's a great investment. It doesn't have a history of being a money metal, like gold does, and it'lllikely be less liquid. If I buy more platinum coins, it'll just be fun fun. I'll definitely buy more platinum jewelry though, as I view it as superior to silver.

I mean your grandpa risked his life to keep it and pass it down to you. 2 generations of adults managed to hold onto it despite probably being broke and desperate for cash several times.

Just pretend you don't own it. Don't think of it as a possible lifeline if you run out of money. Honestly it might be better to be homeless than to sell something like that.

You keep that coin and become homeless. Your homelessness is based on a systemic issue you have and not because you don't have 500$ this one time. If you do sell it you'll just run into the same problem again later except you won't have that family heirloom to save you.
Keep it, become homeless, and work on the issue that got you here in the first place.

in real life some people wind up homeless sometimes. Particularly if mommy and daddy aren't footing their bills.

I've been homeless on 3 occasions, 2 of them by choice. It's not the end of the world. You actually save a shitload of money when you're not paying rent. Also you learn how to take a bath in gas station bathrooms, and that's fun.

The battery EV pundits are pretty shrill about how awful hydrogen is, but their complaints really just amount to "lack of infrastructure", which is not even a technical challenge. It's just the current stage of development. Meanwhile, battery EV sales are sagging while hydrogen makes inroads in aviation, trucking, and rail. As long as Toyota is bullish on hydrogen, it is still in the game. And unless somebody discovers a replacement, platinum is THE pinch point for hydrogen. Even hydrogen used in ICE requires platinum to catalyze the electrolysis that generates the hydrogen. I may not live to see it, but one day the world's energy will be mostly nuclear and hydrogen.

But platinum is a bet on more or less continuous global economic development. I would make sure to have enough silver and gold before I went with platinum.

I can also confirm that cheapies exist. I do gold but in the last few years some of my wins from ebay are:

1. 50g 14k ring that I stupidly sold for 80% of spot the day it came in. Paid $700 Canadian and that was less than a year ago

2. 26g 10k masonic badge that I paid $100 for on ebay from a guy that hangs out at a flea market. The same guy sold me a 14k NOS birks women's watch for 50 bucks. It was small but thick so I guessed that I could break even since it only needed to be a few grams to break even. Ended up being 10g.

3. 36g 10k bracelet that I paid 600 Canadian dollars for. This was in the last year

4. a bracelet and necklace set in 14k tri-color gold. Was 28g and had a picture of the scale but the guy misread it as 2.8g and sold it to me for around 100 bucks

5. Two tourneau 18k heavy watches from when Tourneau was experimenting with their own house brand. One fully iced with diamonds. Both have ETA movements for easy servicing. The biggest cash for gold company in Canada is headquartered in my city and all their purchases are funnelled to the head office so I go there on my days off. They stupidly got the two watches appraised and the appraiser said that they're only worth the gold weight so they listed them basically at spot -- but since they sat around for a few years before selling I was able to buy them at around 90% of spot after tax.

6. a 20 franc rooster pendant set in 18k gold. Came out to about 12.6g total if I remember correctly. Paid 500 Canadian dollars with tax and shipping. wore it for about a year and then scrapped it for 1000 bucks.

I don't even think it is all that far fetched to see silver rise to $200 given how teeny tiny the market cap is. Even the notion that your "share" of silver spread amongst the entire population is a silver coin the size of a penny is simply jaw dropping. Silver is best in class on conductivity, thermo conductivity, hardest known alloy, reflective, best in class for conductivity, with medicinal uses. What doesn't this material do? Priced at 87 ounces per oz of gold meaning on its face it's undervalued 10x.
Let them try to tell me otherwise. This is the shit you should be storing your long term wealth while in the middle of a banking implosion all but admitting in early Jan2023 by a massive banking conference held by all of the regulators talking about "bail ins".

Nice fren, it's the first time i ended up with some in a junk lot (x3 2 kroners + x1 1 kroner, all 1876 iirc). But the big winner here probably is the 2 reales 1751 from the Mexico City mint. Condition could be better but the coin is really hard to find, so i'm hoping for 60 bux at least.

Gotta love cheapies, I remember the masonic badge that was a killer score. I wouldn't quit the day job but as a hobby it sure beats IQDELET's love of harvesting used condoms in 3rd world shitholes. One of my favorite gold slurps last year was this little antique 14k diamond ring at the front of the scale for $4.24 at Goodwill, I've found many heavier pieces but antique diamonds are cool, I can almost taste the suffering of the enslaved 'groids who mined it.

The spam is tiresome to see even as someone who already had crypto by time PMs were acquired. It's just post after post fantasizing about how much people are losing rather than seeing them as staying squarely on-topic.

its just a hobby. I actually want to start a real business as a Costco supplier to make real money instead of being a wagie stacking up small pieces of gold. There's so much gold I find myself wanting now that I have the itch that it is impossible to satisfy my demand with my current income level.

Read that as "ton" at a glance and had to look again. Missed out on a juicy 344oz last year cause I didn't seize an opportunity.

You might want to look for Xylene or Toluene, or whatever paint/lacquer thinners are available in frogland. Acetone is great but only one of several solvents you should have on hand.

Easily in the top 3 best deals ever posted. Never gets old to hear about it. That's literally how i imagine the american dream.

Here a coin from the lot, it's nothing special, just an 1 Franc 1919, but the patina made the volumes pop out and i fell in love with her. I own thousands of those, but for the first time i stopped and really appreciated the design, and she's beautiful. I'm like a fucking gollum fondling her all day long now.

I wish i got a phone taking decent pics, this one wont do the coin any justice.

It was way cheaper when it was used as currency.
