Welcome to the Monero General, dedicated to the discussion of the world's leading decentralized P2P privacy cryptocurrency!

Monero is secure, low-fee, and fungible, meaning users can send XMR around the globe despite corrupt governments or broken financial systems. Innovative privacy features such as Ring Signatures, Stealth Addresses, and Ring CT ensure that Monero's blockchain is obfuscated -- In other words, the financial history of all Monero users is encrypted from the prying eyes of adversaries on a public blockchain, with transactions being visible only by a user willingly providing a view key.

Monero has also improved upon the scaling downsides of current popular cryptocurrencies. To avoid high fees, dynamic block size ensures that the size of the blocks will increase as the amount of transactions increases. Further, the mining network algorithm RandomX establishes that anybody with a CPU can participate in mining, preventing the ASIC miner domination that creates a high barrier to entry. Lastly, the mining network will be preserved by Tail Emission -- instead of the block reward falling to zero like with Bitcoin, the block reward gradually approached 0.6 XMR in June 2022, where it will forever stay. This constant linear inflation means the inflation rate will asymptotically go to zero while continuing to provide an incentive to miners to maintain the network.

If you still have questions, feel free to ask and a MoneroChad will be with you shortly.

Can somebody break down in non schizo terms what this crypto "market" is going to be end of decade? Bitcoin is unsustainable if that one posters numbers are real but institutes are throwing everything at it. Defi is a big black box of nothing. We have over 1 million coins according to coinmarketcap. Are the shitcoin factory coins like eth going to be shut down and the fed releases XRPee (token not needed though) backed CBDC while the btc ETFs crab up then dump slowly like sears stock after the internet went public? Then your options of finance left are either frequently hacked AI driven FEDbux or monero miner gangs?

>how many years has tether been getting away with this

Since at least 2016. They were fined $41 million in 2021 for flat-out lying about USDT being 1:1 backed, turns out issuing unbacked Tethers was/is the norm. They were also caught lying about their ownership of Bitfinex.

And they STILL stubbornly refuse to submit to a *full and thorough* 3rd party audit despite promising to do so for years, we have to take these admitted liars at their word that "Tether is totally backed now, bro, trust me!"

The entire operation is shady as fuck: Tether is about to hit $100 billion USDT issued yet it has only 5 employees managing everything....it also relies on a very convoluted issuance scheme that seems specifically designed to frustrate litigation efforts.

>Nowhere in Tether’s Terms is it mentioned at all whether, as far as a USDT user is concerned, the USDT issuance comes from Tether Limited, or Tether International Limited.

>Everything appears to depend on where the user is domiciled which creates an impossible infinite loop to determine the appropriate forum to bring any litigation.

>For example, let’s say you’re a US-person, Tether’s lawyers could argue the USDT you hold was issued by Tether Limited (the BVI entity), and given you don’t have a direct relationship with Tether (it was purchased in secondary markets), that makes your use of Tether in violation of Tether’s Terms.

>Tether’s lawyers could then defend a claim by pleading forum non conveniens — meaning the court where that lawsuit has been brought is not the proper forum to exercise jurisdiction over the case.

I was last interested in it in 2018 but was too young and had no money to invest then and just now i started to make some basic income. my question is how do i even begin? where do i learn about this stuff, mind you im not the type of a retard that would instantly buy the top to start panic selling when it drops or whatever. >(20*1000**3)/26367.97=758496
Which means with a 0.6XMR reward per block, 6 blocks per hour and 24 hours per day you can on average expect
>((0.6/758496)*6*24)=0.0001
0.0001 XMR a day, currently worth a cent or two.

Then you go to the IRS, you give them a printed photo of you holding your government-issued ID card and allow them to watch and count as you add or remove money into it. They can't observe the wallet itself, but by willingly coughing up your info and showing them your money, it's pretty fucking simple to deduce that Anon P. Fucklesuck has 13.37 monero in his wallet.

Thank you to the anon who donated some xmr yesterday to my fundraiser. I'm going to convert the xmr into cash and buy some charcoal pretty soon, since i don't have any at the moment. I'm not sure that this is how it works. Here's what I'm thinking:

If they print out of thin air to buy BTC then those USDT will end up the hands of those ex-owners of BTC that sold the BTC to Tether, they'll likely try to cash out a good big chunk of those USDT. So either Tether will end up paying for that BTC they bought by having to redeem that USDT, or the USDT price would drop (which isn't allowed to happen or the facade falls). You could say that any USDT not redeemed after they purchased BTC with it is basically a discount for their BTC purchase, and that's true. So effectively their aim is to convince people to hold on to more USDT. Is this whole print out of thin air to purchase BTC the best way to do that?

I'd say the following is more likely: Someone wants to buy BTC. They buy USDT that they can use on an exchange. Tether mints the USDT, give them to the buyer, and immediately invests the USD it received it in BTC, pumping up the price in the process, and attracting more users due to FOMO as the price goes up who want to be onboarded into the exchanges using USDT.

Though now that I'm thinking about it. Both ways could work, independently or in tandem. Whatever they do to pump up the price means more people get FOMOd into the exchanges system, requiring USDT.

The Monero community has a huge overlap with the open source privacy tech sphere, so it comes from a fundamentalist point of view that opting into a KYC exchange goes against the very nature of using privacy-respecting tech in the first place.

The problem with smaller glass bottles is that they break really easy, so the packaging costs will be extremely high. Glass bottles also weight way more if someone orderes a 6pack. There are also smaller 0,5l aluminuim cans but they cost 0,25€/can extra because if we bring the can back to the supermarkets we get the 0,25€ back what is not possible in this case. You just made it sound even worse. Please tell me that at least when sending simple payments it doesn't take a 5% cut every time and that it only happens on the "official" marketplace.
>So what's ebay's yearly revenue ?
I'm not comparing to ebay though. Nor is my complaint that the fee is high.
>Why not use both coins ?
There are thousands of coins out there. I need clear reasons to use them, not clear reasons to avoid them. This one seems to me till now like a downgrade from Monero (e.g. has staking) with some applications built on top of it (correct me if I misunderstood).

Seems too complex to me and when I see complex payment structures I just move along cause they all seem like differently shaped pyramid schemes to me. The token already has a market cap of 1.8 million USD. That's the evaluation of a trading platform which I don't understand how it will evolve in the future at all (who governs it and with what goals?), and which is created to support only a single cryptocurrency that's not used on other trading platforms but was created specifically for this platform.

Good luck to them, I hope they make a great market that lasts long but I have my doubts because of this weird coupling between the currency and a specific trading platform, marketed as one.

We definitely need more OpenBazaar style markets, but I want one that supports other currencies and doesn't come with its own currency.

It is also a replacement for Western Union and MoneyGram, no limits, you cn send whatever amount you want, even $1 million, no questions asked, super low fees (less than 1 penny), and way faster than a wire transfer or Western Union/Moneygram, almost instant. >If they print out of thin air to buy BTC then those USDT will end up the hands of those ex-owners of BTC that sold the BTC to Tether, they'll likely try to cash out a good big chunk of those USDT. So either Tether will end up paying for that BTC they bought by having to redeem that USDT,

That's the neat thing - the average USDT user can't actually cash out to USD, Tether's ToS make certain of that.

First of all, they don't allow Tether redemption for amounts below $100K, which excludes basically the vast majority of USDT users.

>To redeem your tokens, you will need:

>A verified Tether.to account.

>The minimum redeemable amount of Tether tokens on your account. The minimum redemption amount is 100,000 USD equivalent.

https://tether.to/en/redeem-tethers-to-fiat-currency/

But wait, there's more!

>Additionally, U.S. citizens must be classified as Eligible Contract Participant to redeem USDT via the website."

What is an "Eligible Contract Participant" you ask?

>An Eligible Contract Participant includes a corporation with total assets exceeding $10,000,000 and incorporated in a jurisdiction outside the United States or its territories or insular possessions.

Second, they reserve the right to refuse redemption whenever it suits them by invoking "muh liquidity issues". Article 3 of Tether’s ToS explicitly states:

>Tether reserves the right to delay the redemption or withdrawal of Tether Tokens if such delay is necessitated by the illiquidity or unavailability or loss of any Reserves held by Tether to back the Tether Tokens, and Tether reserves the right to redeem Tether Tokens by in-kind redemptions of securities and other assets held in the Reserves. Tether makes no representations or warranties about whether Tether Tokens that may be traded on the Site may be traded on the Site at any point in the future, if at all.

https://tether.to/en/legal/

Essentially: "We can't guarantee you'll ever actually be able to cash out. Problem?"

its no surprise lightning is the most complicated l2 network because its the most decentralized l2 network by a huge margin. if you make it as centralized as all the ethereum l2s are by using custodian wallets it's as easy to use as those are.

>> No.57784773

>>57784635
It can be decentralized but it has so many issues when it is. If you make it centralized then you have a company providing the liquidity and a topology that looks like a star where 1000 users are connected to that company. The company can then have clear requirements about what it demands of someone before opening a channel to them and reserving liquidity on their side of the channel.

Now if you want to make it a true mesh, it's a fuckfest. Would you reserve $50 on a channel with me? Why would you? You have no clue if I'll be using that channel enough for the fees to make it worth it. You also don't know if I will be creating channels towards other users or if I'm just taking advantage of you by having you connect me as a leaf to the network without providing any second hand connections to you from my side.

And then there's all the problems and added complexity of accepting payments while offline, or having someone watching your channel while you are offline, or routing over a network that you want to be big and distributed but making it big and distributed increases the chances of payment failures because something changes in between, and crap like that. Sooooooo many moving parts. It's a horrible over-engineered mess that makes "use tabs" seem like a good solution.

Payment channels (and even a network of them like LN) are a good solution ONLY for exchanges that want to keep liquidity and do a thousand quick payments between them every second with practically no fees. It's an great idea that doesn't need to be overengineered when used in a proper place, but it's presented as a solution for the wrong problem and in an effort to make it fit, it has been turned into a monstrosity.

And we didn't even touch the possibility (or actually the impossibility) of a mass channel closing caused the discovery of a critical bug. Where the closing fees will be so high that most channels won't be worth closing and will be at the mercy of the poor side.

the new AML checker on trocador is interesting. when buying a nominal amount of LTC from a random exchange off trocador itself, the AML checker correctly identifies the funds as medium risk simply for being bought off a no-kyc exchange. checkers like this will soon become ubiquitous.
who is comfortable holding "medium" or "high risk" funds in any large amount? i predict this will drive crypto holders to two camps: kyc only (in which case, they won't transact for fear of sending/receiving tainted coins), or xmr-only, the only coin that can't be tainted. this will force your hand, there will be no middle ground.

you're slowly getting it. they're for recurring payments and business relationships which represent 90%+ of all payments individuals make already over their lifetime.

there's no reason to over-complicate a protocol for the niche edge-cases of someone wanting to spray money randomly to people when most people will never do that. the use case is to remove the vast, vast majority of payments (which are uneconomic to make due to block demand) from the permanent, expensive layers. lightning isn't bitcoin, it doesn't need to carefully make decisions that affect decades in the future, it's fine to throw lighting away and replace it with the next thing eventually.

there is no other way to solve this problem without adding cryptographic complexity to the base layer (including cryptography that hasn't yet been invented). zero knowledge proofs get close, but the fundamental problem is blockchains do not scale.

>> No.57799766

>>57799157
>but the fundamental problem is blockchains do not scale.
Why can't they scale at least as fast as the tech scales? BTC is just insisting on being stuck at tech levels acceptable for 2010. 14 years. 14 years of tech becoming better and BTC using none of it and lost most grassroots adoption because of it to other coins.

> they're for recurring payments and business relationships which represent 90%+ of all payments individuals make already over their lifetime.

OK let them target that audience and see how it works. None of these people has trouble transacting freely in the first place, and the are already heavily regulated so BTC will change nothing for them. You need adoption from the ground-up if you intend to replace the financial system. Nobody should give a crap if Adidas uses BTC to settle with their suppliers and banks.

Like any other ghost chain with no usage. doesn't have a fraction of the usage bitcoin has. Picrel (can't even see the red line of XMR it's so nonexistent compared to BTC) If it had the usage of Bitcoin the fees would be unfathomably large. You are just regurgitating bitcoin maxi dogma.

There is absolutely no reason to NOT believe that Monero can have sufficient independent "home-run" nodes, so far as the badnwidth, along with SSD disk space, becomes larger & cheaper to reach.

Bitcoiners just stuck on a stupid 1 MB blocksize limit, and thus try to bad-mouth actually possible scaling on the base layer along wit the advances in bandwidth&storage.

Don't even bother with these morons. It's easier just to indulge their NGU delusions while encouraging them to never spend their coins.

Bitcoin hoarders are God's gift to the Monero economy.

>No blockchain scales without sacrificing decentralization. That's the job of Layer 2s.
BTC has refused to scale since 2010, on purpose, despite the tech scaling. It could have scaled without losing decentralization, but refused to do so. What's the point of being able to run it on old Raspberry Pis? You've made decentralization of blockchain validation, which is a USELESS feature for 95% of users, some holy grail that must never be touched, when ASIC mining which actually defines the rules of what is the chain with the most PoW is centralized AF.

>Picrel (can't even see the red line of XMR it's so nonexistent compared to BTC)
Let me overlay on that graph the number of almonds I eat every day too. Why are you comparing number of SHA/sec with RandomX/sec? This is absolutely meaningless. You can get any relation you want between them by simply changing the algorithm.

>If it had the usage of Bitcoin the fees would be unfathomably large.
What? Why? Give me the math cause you are just pulling things out of your ass at this point. Block size or block size adjustability somehow doesn't play into this equation?

>Look at fucking ethereum fees today which is at a quarter size of BTC.
Again a meaningless comparison. Ethereum is a completely different beast because validation there has completely different computational costs.

Not exactly half the size. Monero has <180GB blockchain, and btc has >500 GB blockchain. (that's what I read on my home node for btc).

>Good luck scaling that
Yeah, thanks. Many devs are looking into/considering future improvements into cutting the average transaction size on Monero. Bulletproofs++ is one of such improvements. Future may provide us with better compression techniques, especially after Monero switches to full membership proofs.

>I'm sure the average normie will run a 18TB full node to secure the network.

By the time XMR will require 18 TB disk space, we might have such storage spaces cheaper at today's 2 TB SSD price points. You never know.

Also, I would celebrate such a grand-adoption of XMR if it were to reach these sizes of blockchain. Long live Monero!

Miners don't mean jack shit without node validators keeping them in check. I run 3 full bitcoin nodes and two of them are on raspberry pis. Look at the hardware requirements of running an Ethereum node or a Solana node. Those shitchains are still exponentially larger than fucking Monero. Enjoy your little ghostchain's low fees due to the lack of its usage, but don't pretend like it wouldn't be absolutely wrecked if it were to scale to the size of Bitcoin.

You're correct in that. By 2060 Monero might hyptohetically reach Bitcoin's current size.

Oh, and as far as the blockchain size goes: ZKP recursion promises fucking INSANE compression since a single proof can be used to validate thousands of other proofs instead of each proof having to be validated individually i.e. you're only recording a fraction of current data to the chain.

This, in combination with growing storage capacities and increasing bandwidth, is what will help Monero scale on-chain in future.

Maxipadads are utterly clueless about what optimizations lay in store so feel free to disregard their "expert" opinions on such matters.

Wow another r/buttcoin classic. This general is literally plebbit on /biz/. Tulip bubble happened once, it popped, then never returned. Bitcoin is like Amazon before the dotcom bubble. Was amazon a tulip bubble ponzi scam just because it crashed massively in 2001? Was Apple? Was Microsoft?

Maxipads are wonderfully stupid:

- they actually believe BTC's insane price action is a reflection of organic market forces
- they hoard their coins en masse while simultaneously expecting a healthy circular economy to magically emerge
- they actually believe there is enough liquidity in this zero-sum clown market for them all to cash out at a fat profit
- they take Mike Saylor seriously

Just indulge their retarded takes and continue encouraging them to hoard their coins, let nature take its course.

thankfully bitcoin remains the one place the users actually have enough power to tell them to die.
