Been getting my tools ready for the coming prospecting season, the handle on my larger antique miner's pick was loose and none of the quick fixes I tried worked so I invested the time to do it right.

I made ancient style hot melt "glue" by melting down chunks of pine tree resin, then mixing powdered charcoal, beeswax and bacon grease into the piping hot goo until the consistency was right. After seating and wedging the pick head as well as possible I heated the socket area then poured the molten "glue" into the random gaps and slathered it all around, then smoothed and pressed it in by hand when it was cool enough to touch but still plastic. It worked even better than I hoped so I'll make lots more and restore a bunch of other loosely hafted antique tools I have in the garage, feels good to bring these things back to life. Interesting idea. I don't currently own any merc dimes, but it might be worth it to try out. I've been doing some looking around today and found a guy who made picrel. The melting point for silver is roughly a thousand degrees fahrenheit hotter than lead so casting isn't going to work with my current reloading setup, and it's not like I have dedicated shop space to set up a lathe to turn out a solid silver bullet (which I believe is what the guy who made these did).
That said, it looks like continuing on with silver buckshot is the best option for making a fully functional silver round. The roosevelt dimes are an interesting option, but I would think that the silver shot would behave and pattern more like traditional buck/birdshot. Has anyone ever handloaded dimes and done a penetration test with them?
Either way, the display box this guy did turned out fantastic, and I think creating something like this could be a fun project. I'll take pics and post updates if I can get into it in the next week or two.

Hey Bob, for cracked handles I like using cloth grip tape from the sporting goods section they sell for wrapping hockey sticks and bats and whatnot, it's good strong stuff and it looks and wears better than duct tape. Replacing handles is always an option but when salvageable I always prefer the old/original ones, they look and feel more authentic and sovlfvl. To protect and preserve the wood you can use 50/50 mineral spirits and linseed oil, Carnauba wax based hardwood floor paste wax, or use a blowtorch or heat gun to melt beeswax into the handles. My miner's pick was probably for mining coal and is smaller than standard pickaxes and mattocks, its handle is basically the same as that of a double-bit axe. Feels very nimble in the hand, they're cool tools.

I think the real issue is that crypto is, at this point, clearly just a ponzi scheme. Thanks for advice on the handle, I think the wax idea might work on that one. The duct tape on mine was from the previous owner and I think it's just for grip.
