If you're getting a paycheck from a company you are getting tax withheld. Usually they withhold too much, and then you get the rest back at the end of the year.

If you're independent then I guess you're not paying the taxes in the first place, so then what I said wouldn't apply, but you could be on the hook if the IRS notices.

Well it's rare anymore but you can legally not file taxes if you get paid on a strictly cash or check basis and or don't work for a uh let's shall we say "legally bound" company. Short version; long as you don't get a W-2, bank accounts earn more than $10 in interest, or you own any stocks,retirement accounts (401k,IRA,etc) then your golden.
