it's like an asic is for bitcoin. specialized for high memory intensive applications and specific calculations. just so happens graphics chips are the right tool for this. honestly this has been a long time coming. compute is getting specialized and generalized x86 processors aren't really pulling their weight on anything anymore. any application specific process needs application specific hardware and Nvidia has been doing that since forever.
