Salamander reporting in. Started getting concerned in 2013 and jumped into prepping goods against famine and unrest. In the last few years had a couple of windfalls that basically went right into silver. Wife thought I was a silly willy, but a few months later gave me the fiat I gave her to waste to put into silver as she started waking up. Her reward for this may very well be the addition of a couple sister wives to go through the hard times with.

That reminds me. Stopped at the store to get cash from the ATM. Next to the ATM machine is one of those machines that you can buy shitcoin from. The machine as far back as I can remember has been "out of service". Not because it was broke, you just weren't able to use it according to what it said on the screen.

Anyway, for some reason it was up and running this morning. Weird how I'm now able to buy at the top, right before they rug all the retards.

GSM comes out with several mini-mintages that are very high-priced from the get-go. I don't know how people find out about them, but then they appear on ebay. Pic related. ebay takes 13% (last I heard), plus there's shipping, plus the sellers want to make a profit (don't we all), and then there's the "I know what I have" syndrome.
So yeah, expect prices for rare pieces to go for a lot on ebay.

I get that people need to make money with their Ebay business, but with this particular mint (GSM)there seems to be a group of dedicated buyers that scoop up everything from the mini-mintages and pretty much scalp the rounds for unreasonable prices. For the tree of life round that I posted above, the seller was selling "pre-sale" rounds that they didn't even have yet. I guess this is their business model, I just don't care for it. Oh well, I should be focusing on gold anyway.

the whole "Oh no I can't sell my silver at the coin dealer so it's worthless" fud is so stupid, every local auction near me has silver selling above spot, if you got ripped off at the coin dealer then say so but you deserved it for selling to them in the first place.

>ebay takes 13% (last I heard)
That's what they charge filthy casuals that sell low volumes.
People with larger volumes will pay for an ebay "store" which has a flat fee per month depending on volume, as well as a much lower percentage of sales.

so in reality the ebay vig varies a lot. A store selling very large volume is probably paying in the 5% range or so after all fees are calculated. But yeah, the average schmuck selling on ebay is paying 13.5% on the whole sale including shipping, and it's damn hard to make a profit at that rate. To pay for your time listing and shipping items you probably want a 100% markup on most stuff unless you're equipped and set up to do online sales already.

/pmg/ doesn't really understand collectibles, they balk when prices go well above bullion content or cost of production. It's actually kinda funny to coin collectors who are paying thousands of percent in premiums because the premium over cost is the point of the investment.

>)there seems to be a group of dedicated buyers that scoop up everything from the mini-mintages and pretty much scalp the rounds for unreasonable prices.
This isn't scalping, it's just buying from a wholesaler in bulk and then reselling at retail prices. Every retailer does it. What you're paying for is you don't have to come up with $75k or whatever for a minimum order, nor do you have to store a huge excess of inventory.

People don't complain about it much when it's things like groceries or clothes or electronics because they have no idea what these things cost to make and have never heard of the wholesalers. But you're still paying double or more what your stuff costs to make most of the time. It's not scalping. It's just retailing.

scalping is when an unlicensed individual buys an item in bulk at retail prices and then resells it even higher. Which probably isn't happening there.

>> No.57661985

>>57658279
the reason scalping isn't likely to be happening is it's illegal, and the wholesaler or manufacturer works to prevent it by only selling to licensed retailers it has already vetted and given permission to resell their product.

right? If some rando goes to the manufacturer and preorders their entire product run, they have the right to refuse the order and they almost always will. They decide who gets to resell their goods, how much they can sell, how they market it, and how much it will list for. And they exercise that right vigorously. Manufacturers don't just be selling to whoever orders from them. That's not how it works.

>> No.57662003

>>57661985
this gets confusing because a lot of wholesalers/manufacturers ALSO sell retail to the public. But if you try to go on their website and order all of their inventory they're going to tell you to fuck off. They have a process for deciding who gets to sell their products, and the average person won't pass it.

>> No.57662072

>>57662003
>They have a process for deciding who gets to sell their products, and the average person won't pass it.
generally to order silver or gold coins in bulk from a manufacturer you need at minimum:
1. A business license
2. A tax license
3. A good credit rating with D&B
4. Verifiable sales data for the past 3 years
5. A secure warehouse or vault to store inventory
6. A retail outlet
7. A contract with the wholesaler to buy some quantity of inventory

that's about it. You have to apply to sell retail goods, and they do interview you and check your credentials.

The purpose of all these hoops is one mintanon has already seen....

If I sell you a coin for $45
And you turn around and ebay it for $250
I should've just sold you that coin for $250, right?

I'm giving away money if I don't get some of the action from the secondary market. I can control that to some extent both with my price, and by controlling who has permission to resell my product in quantity. So I do that. I control the markup by raising my price and limiting who can buy and sell my product.

dead thread, might as well write an essay on the business of dealing coins and bullion.

/pmg/ has been around for half a decade, it's a bit odd nobody here has put together a bullion buying co-op, at least to get wholesale prices.

I assume it's because most posters here are at least moderately antisocial, and trust would be an issue on any cooperative endeavor. Also not a huge number of posters or buyers here, probably not enough to support a /pmg/ bullion store. But it would result in getting bullion at or below spot, and numismatic coins at half price or so.

>> No.57662366

>>57662323
The main reason I suppose is one /pmg/ doesn't like to admit:

the markup on bullion and coins is extremely low from a business standpoint. It's simply not worth the work to save a few percent in premiums. Which implies that the dealers currently serving the market aren't making that much money off it. Not the way /pmg/ imagines anyways.

But most here don't understand business. They haven't realized that profits may not matter much at all in a world where market share is much more important. Or real estate. Or business equity. Or brand.

There's this assumption that people selling metals and coins are making tons of money off the sales, which probably isn't true. Even at IQ's oft-repeated 40% premium, that's still not enough to be profitable off a few tens of thousands of dollars worth of sales.

>>57662366
>that's still not enough to be profitable off a few tens of thousands of dollars worth of sales.
but as Bezos proved with Amazon, you can make literal billions selling goods at a loss if you get enough market share.

this probably won't happen with physical metals because the potential supply is much larger than the market, so the person selling at a loss can't corner supply even if they manage to corner sales. Simply put, most silver and gold isn't sold in physical form, and sales of physical metal can be pulled from sales of warehoused metal and industrial metal if the price goes high enough. As we saw in 2021. Basically, stackers and numismatists are far too small a fraction of the whole market to ever corner the market on their own. That would require hundreds of millions of people taking physical delivery, and even then they might not succeed since industry and derivatives are going to get first dibs on any metal stored or produced. So we're left with collectors paying the spot price based on industrial and paper investments, and complaining about the markup.

The real red pill is that most coin dealers don't sell bullion to make money off stackers. They sell to get you in the coin store because they know stackers turn into coin collectors over time, and coins are where they actually make their money.

>> No.57662550

>>57662509
>coins are where they actually make their money.
and this is why most stackers turn into coin collectors. In the US at least, the market for collectible coins is much more active and profitable than the market for raw metal. Stackers become coin collectors because that's what they make money off of. Bullion stores tend to become coin stores because that's where the money is. And eventually the desire to make some money tends to overcome the desire to stack metals that usually underperform coins.

The biggest danger for the numismatist is also the same reason coin stores make money. When you die, your heirs will probably sell your collection for a fraction of what it's worth. And in that case a person would be better off buying their kids and wives almost anything other than coins or bullion, because they're just going to get ripped off when it comes time to sell. Usually quite badly.

though this is again just business.

If you spent a lifetime building your collection, it's probably going to take a retailer a lifetime to sell it off. Either that or they wind up selling it fast for far less than it's worth. So it's not really a case of your family getting ripped off so much as you buying coins at full retail and then selling them back at wholesale prices. Which usually loses you money, even over time spans of 50 years or whatever.

Bullion is much simpler since it usually sells right around spot without a lot of questions or negotiation. But again, spot will not have increased over your lifetime nearly as fast as collectible coins have increased.

The way around this is to sell your collection or stack for a profit at some point before you die, but we don't usually get to know when we're going to die, and once we're close to death we're too busy with that to sell off a bunch of metal and make a profit. So the world keeps on turning and coin and bullion dealers keep on turning a profit.

Anyways, none of this whole process is illegal or unethical, it's just how the business works. People selling coins for a substantial markup on ebay or anywhere else are able to do that because that's what the coin is worth. They're not scalpers or bad people most of the time, they're just business owners. If you don't like their prices, don't buy the product.

Likewise when it comes time to sell you might get blindsided by the total loss of any numismatic premiums you paid. That's not a scam, that's how the market works. Just because a person loses money on something, or someone else makes money, does not mean the loser is a victim or the winner a criminal. It's just how things work. You take that risk when you buy something as an investment. You're hoping it will make you money. Usually it doesn't. And that's not the fault of the system or the people operating in it. A person should know before buying an investment how long they'll have to hold it, and what the risk is that they'll lose money. In coins and bullion, you'll generally have to hold a very long time, and unless you really know what you're doing, there's substantial risk you will lose money on it. But even if you do it blindly, some of the shit you buy is bound to pay off eventually.

There really are no good moves for what is likely coming. It's just PMs happens to be one the least shitty moves. Obviously being self sufficient with land on a homestead or farm with chickens and gardens and livestock would be ideal but who can afford that in this stage of the game? As I understand it there were farming families in the midwest who didn't even know about the crash in '29 for years because they were so insulated.

For most who see either a coming economic collapse or eventual natural cataclysm PMs will at least allow local communities to rebuild a financial system with sound money if they choose to. After wargamming out all the scenarios I think PMs are one of the best options availible.

Everything is going to suck for a while unless you're genuinely self-sufficient. You prepare as best you can short of that, and PMs are likely to retain some sort of value as money themselves during the shake up or to be traded in for whatever the new™ money will be after.

I cant wait until we have real money again; paper money (the kind that was backed by metal) is ok, fiat is troll3ry. Metal coinage is the best. Durable, scarce, tangible, loyal, Independent, familiar.

I don't think the shipping would matter much because most of the thread is already paying shipping.

economy of scale would definitely matter. But a nonprofit selling for no markup should be able to get metals out cheaper than a for-profit business. Just need someone willing to do the work for free to start. Run it like an ETF but instead of warehousing the metal you ship it to the owner. And instead of a group of fund managers each making millions you just have one dude with the necessary compliance shit handling the whole thing for a reasonable salary. Not sure if plebbit has ever tried something like this. It seems like a natural progression to serve an existing market. Similar to the comex bar slices, but able to get whatever bars or coins the group wanted enough of to purchase in bulk.

>What I'm talking about is a specific mint, doing small runs, usually about 500-700 strikes.
but even then they should be refusing sales to scalpers. Either by limiting orders or raising prices or both.

it's possible the whole run is being sold to scalpers, but that's costing them a shitload of money if so.

>> No.57665020

>>57663058
this is mintanon's conundrum

if they're selling coins for $45 and scalpers are turning around and selling them for $90, they need to raise their prices. Even on really small runs there shouldn't be an opportunity for scalping like that. If coins are being scalped, the price is too low.

not sure that mintanon actually still has this problem though, since secondary sales are now dropping to the point where scalping doesn't work. He's in the right price range.

>> No.57665089

>> No.57665130

>>57665089
They'd need to make some sort of salary once it took off, but it doesn't realistically need to be the millions of dollars a fund manager makes. Or a coin store owner. Because unlike a coin store, they're taking on pretty much zero risk if the order is paid before it ships.

as the anon mentions, scale would be a problem since coins from the mint have minimum purchase requirements, but sometimes the number is quite low.
