Ever since (((they))) started pulling this talmudic shit last autumn, i've seen maybe 20 differents coin shops getting bank-banned for this bullshit reason.
There are a gazillion other businesses who deal with more cash than LCS, yet only LCS are being targeted on the premise that cash = illegal.

Eventually this will spread out to every other avenue until cash is entirely banned from our existence (remember when it was a "conspiracy theory" just 3 years ago?). But it's very telling to see the very first businesses getting punished are the ones selling gold & silver.
Basically they are banning the purchase of real money using fake money, that they will soon outlaw for an even faker money.

Can't imagine something screaming "dying empire in the hands of control freaks" more than that. Over here they banned all individual purchases over 1,000€ in cash last year. And they already want to reduce the limit to 500€ before EOY.
The first limit was set at 100,000€, 20 years ago, so you couldn't buy a house in cash. With the same bullshit excuse of muh dirty monies (maybe) from terrorists. Now you can't buy a personal computer in cash. And tomorrow the limit will be set to the level of a pack of water bottles. The infamous terrorists buying bottled water for their jihad.

I feel ya euro fren, funny how they never increased the "money laundering" thresholds here in US for inflation. The automatic reporting is still triggered at $10,000 which is the same as when it was introduced in 1970. Even using the fake inflation statistics it should be over $81k. Funny how this was one year before the gold rug pull huh, gets the nogin jogging.

Feels very similar to the new law triggering automatic reporting of transactions for accounts over $600. Cash is just the ghost of real money so I don't expect much of a fight.

Yep, on a tetradrachm called cistophorus (from the cista, which is a kind of basket, where the ancient mysteries were hidden to the profane eyes and only revealed to the initiates) from Pergamon.
The serpent is the animal form of Dionysus (who is said to be the founder of Pergamon), who get out from the Cista mystica to reveal the secrets of the hidden religion to his disciples.

>I wonder what will happen to the market for ancients when all the boomers die off.
We are already there. That's how i'm slowly building my collection. It would be interesting to track down the auction sales over the years to get an idea. From what i've seen, some are always creeping up in value, while some others went down big time.
As far as i can tell, if the price is good enough, there always are people ready to slurp, unlike for stamps for example. So that's a good sign.

I'd expect the ancients to keep their value pretty well, but apparently it's more the "recent" (1700-1910) stuff who is trending up.
It's not that simple because there are so many different coins of course, but they all sell below their "estimated" value. But estimates seems like bullshit numbers pulled out from stores/auction houses' asses, because i've yet to see a coin selling for it's estimate, unless it's some MS64 big stuff.

I'd love to hear an expert tell us how healthy the market is. Because from my perspective i'd say it could go both way. As you said, going down because of boomers dying flooding the market, plus the disparition of coinage in favor of fully digitalized currencies, making coins less "present" in people's mind.

But on the other hand, internet is already an old thing, the crash from the early 2000s due to the global marketplace (thus people figuring out that more than their examplar existed in the world) is long past. In a way, all the supply is already out there. And people could realize it's a tiny market for a lot of coins. Who only interested a very fringe % of the population. How many athenian owls -the most iconic design in the history of mankind-, still exist to this day?
Probably not that many. It's not like recent collectibles or shitcoins, some coins less than 10 are known to still exist. And it feels like they often sell for absurdly low.
One or two influencers starting to shill old coins on jewtube could very easily saturate the market.

Give me the low down on silver because in our culture we only f with gold.

To me it seems really risky, due to resembling other metals like aluminum, zinc, nickel, etc all are that same shade.

Furthermore, it is not easy to stash because you cant carry several grand worth of silver in an emergency like you could with gold.

Far more importantly the premiums are insane on silver and you never get more than spot when you sell it.

NGC is gonna start carrying the market and you're gonna see slabbed ancients becoming more accepted by collectors.
Younger collectors are still into collecting older US coins like Morgan and Peace dollars and when they eventually get bored from it, they'll move into other things like ancients because collecting foreign coins or banknotes is too esoteric for the average US collector.

In antiquity we used to trade with Rome/Greece in addition to the Arabs, China, Persians, Turks, India, Egypt.

I mean we didn't discover white people in the 1800s broski.

You're a smart guy, you made a fascinating point and based on a quick glance that coin was widespread in our region.

Now anecdotally speaking is there modern era use of Silver in the region? Nope its non existent.

>We are already there. That's how i'm slowly building my collection.
Yep. This was my experience as well.

Saloon tokens are MUCH smaller market than ancients, but I was collecting and dealing them for almost 20 years before covid hit.

we went from fewer than a dozen tokens from my town sold per year, and ghost town tokens in my area sold on average one every 5 years.

Starting in 2020 I saw hundreds of tokens from my town every year, and over 100 ghost town tokens per year. The prices dropped to almost nothing and I slurped for 3 years straight. Now prices have gone back up and sales are dropping back to normal rates. Some sales are breaking records. Rare stuff is hitting ATH. The market is there. People like me have been waiting our whole lives to slurp some of those coins and we got them dirt cheap from boomers dying off. I'm seeing young new buyers entering the market. Demand is strong, and supply got dried up almost instantly.

For antique furnitures, the crash was to be expected. Your article very well sum up the main points. But coins/collectibles aren't furnitures.
All i see is great slurping opportunities in a redefining market.

One example i just pull of out my ass :
Boomers are dying, great. But India is becoming a big player. How many boomers have British-India or East India Company coins in their collection in Europe? Probably a bunch of them. If rich indians become interested in coins, they will most likely build a collection with indian coinage. Then there is a great arbitrage opportunity if you slurped silver rupees for cheap from dying collectors. There are 20x more indians now than during the minting of these coins, and most have been melted down. It's likely a good portion of the existing supply is stuck over here.
Same will be true for chinese dollars, african colonial coins, etc..

No brown people will ever be interested in quintessentially european furtinures like some victorian oak piano. It doesn't accomodate new technologies, nor the downsizing of homes, or the trend of minimalist crap, etc.. And it's not like they know how to play piano. But some silver with Victoria on it, marked with INDIA? You bet. They will try to reclaim their heritage, and it means opportunities for us.

Based bobby smelling the good deals.
My main fear concerning our markets would be a recession hitting really hard and forcing people to give up on their hobbies to put food on the table.
And if so, if you manage to have some cash ready during this period and slurp at the bottom, few years after you become King of the game. Just like few years after 2008 we've witnessed collectibles reach new highs every year.

Sadly that's true anywhere in the world. The minute the US decided to abandon silver in their coinage, every other nation had to follow, or risk to see their coins getting drained away by paper money from neighboring nations. Gresham law in action. Then started the infinite spiraling of devaluation worldwide, and slow slipping of the middle class into poverty. With no change in sight for now.

I don't worry much about recession, boomers weren't selling in 2008 when the US took a giant shit. Houses got cheap, but not coins. Not here anyways. We're in for some huge boomer die off, but as you say, other people still want those coins.

Yea, i wasn't familiar with coins back then. But that's when MTG cards started to go up in value big time (but no boomers in this market, nor was it considered an investment before that, so that's a different animal altogether).
Would've been more correct by me to say alternative way of investing (via new collectibles) started to emerge after 2008.

We hit that one weird. My kids were into Pokemon and Yugioh from the very beginning so I've got boxes full of old cards I've never checked the value on. My youngest son has a few thousand dollars in cards.

My kids never got into Magic, but I was pretty interested because my gen played a lot of D&D. I didn't have anyone to play with though so I never bought the cards. It sucks people grow up and stop playing games, but that's what I've seen. Vidya is popular with old people, but card and tabletop games not so much.

Very interesting analysis, anon. With the internet being well established, it could be that we don't see much change in the prices, aside from the general trend upwards due to inflation. I have to the believe though that there will be people who inherit a few dozen ancient coins, have no idea what they are, their value, how to research them, and don't want to deal with finding out. In those cases, I shudder to think what'll happen.

>>57601846
These are also good points. I've been getting into the habit of checking LCSs whenever I travel just to see what the locals have. Also, I'll note I'm juxtaposed between to schools of thoughts on coin design.
On one hand, intricate designs are beautiful, magnificent, and even bordering heavenly, however on the other hand some coin designs circulate very well as the relief is slowly worn away, the portrait wears gracefully, these coins may not be as intricate but where they lack in that, they make up for it with durability. Those nice coins would never be in my pocket jangling with others, it would be a sin to let those coins wear away.
