My observations have been that the S and P is an overarching number that influences the entire basket within it due to the sheer number of people that trade the S and P in its various forms futures and ETFs and whatnot. But even if the market is at the whims of SPX TA shenanigans from time to time, there are preferential portions of the index that are responsible for the growth and if you can pick out those (its tech everyone wants tech) you make extra gains. i like ameritrade (now schwab) for option gambling since it has the thinkorswim platform, and e-trade as my regular broker since it also had checking, savings accounts, trusts, etc. everything that i needed in one spot. haven't used fidelity but have heard good things about that too. interactive brokers is good if you wanted to trade more exotic and foreign stuff, and it's margin rates are often the cheapest.
