You're legally responsible for the money you accepted under the agreement you'd put it into a specified coin. If he has any transaction receipts (such as a bank transfer) he can hold you liable for it and you'll have to pay him back. So, you can either tell him now and work something out, repay him, or strangle your relationship with him with the possibility of court anyway. Those are your only choices.
