The "Dispersion Trade" is an options strategy where you short index vol (e.g. S&P500) and long the vol of its constituents.
It's been a huge institutional money maker for the last 10 years.

The Dispersion Index, like the VIX is based on the implied volatilities of options and quantifies the market expectation for the underlying stocks to move together or not.

Like VIX futures, the DSPX futures might have high cary with sharp spikes. Great fun to trade.

GDX has a months-end 1-yr annualized total market return of like 10% but a 52-wk price performance of around -12%. I understand the basic differences in methodology behind these measurements, but I don't understand the core mechanism driving this sizable discrepancy. I'd say this to anyone who lost their job looking for a quick buck. Get into trucking brother, I know it sounds retarded, but you can literally get your permit for 80 ish bucks, then take your pick of one of about a dozen companies willing to pay for your cdl license and give you a job afterwards. any one of those companies will pay around 900 weekly, you could easily save up the amount for re-admission and then save up the full room and board cost. and some of the companies weren't the lame OTR sleep at truckstops type, they were local and/or day routes. go back and forth to neighboring cities, listen to podcasts.

only downside is you do have to pay around 5k eventually to the company for your license. but not up front, and most companies will just take a hundred or so out of your paycheck for a year or so.

and I know I know, trucking is stupid yadayada, but what other industry is willing to pay for your license and offer you a job, as long as you show up?

Does it really pay that well in the US? In many Europoor countries, you need to pay for an expensive ass license which you have to renew often btw, you get paid like crap, and you're fat, and... what more can I say? I know people that used to work in trucking and there is a reason they all left. Plus they can't even change to winter tires. So lazy.
Quick buck and if you're willing to work hard? For me it's forestry and/or being an arborist assuming you ain't a total retard. Work in the forest is rewarding and healthy. Can't imagine working in some cubicle or in a truck

America is awesome like that, we still have regulations, but are lazy enforcing them. Like all newer trucks need DEF to run, but you can still buy trucks that don't need DEF, as long as you buy a 2009 or older truck.

my best guess at the moment is energy storage and right now two major methods are pumping water up to a basin, running it back down thru turbines when you need it, and the other method that's newer is gravity storage, you have heavy weights lifted, and released when energy is needed.

all the renewables energy methods are constant output, alternative batteries are needed always.

Europe is investing heavily into the whole decarbonization agenda, and it's increasingly running into issues with wind and solar, firsly space and secondly the peak capacity issues. So the go to examples are Sweden, who is green using hydroelectric but thats not an option for geographically flat areas or with low water, like Poland, the Benelux and Germany, so there if France which gets 60% of its electricity from Nuclear and is therefore considered "Green". In order to achieve the Paris accords and decarbonization while also having a stable grid , Nuclear is the best option.

I am an electrical engineer so I might be taking this too much from a technical analysis, but I dont think there are many other options to achieve the stated agenda. Of course, its also possible the agenda will simply be abandoned. But the populist right is generally in favour of nuclear energy too.

You cant really build dams across the north European plain, the geography doesnt suit it. Switzerland and Scandinavian countries can do it, but its not an option for most of the European heartland. And then in Iberia the water level is simply too low. So what they have done is gone in on wind and solar. The issue we have now is for example that in the Netherlands 40% of households have solar panels, and 17% of total energy output is from wind and solar, causing massive grid peaks. That instability is increasingly unworkable as we have no ways to really store or use the excess and demand goes up at night when solar is useless. So what option do we have besides either classical power like coal and gas, which is politically undesirable, or nuclear.

You don't, but it sure does consume a whole lot of it. Cloud computing takes up 1-1.3% of all energy demand globally for instance. If this AI meme takes off it's going to require more energy as well. But you're correct that energy prices probably won't skyrocket to new highs if AI becomes as big of a deal as the hype is selling it to be. If you want to play the AI game there are other equities for that. Energy demand will keep growing regardless, making energy investments the thinking man's choice.

Well the reason northern Europe has a lot more solar, especially privately owned solar (homes) is just that there is better legislation and people have more capital to invest. I have worked in Portugal for the EDP (state owned energy company that is a practical monopoly) and its simply a bureaucratic hell in the south, and people are too poor. So incentives would have to be created like tax breaks, 0 interest loans for businesses and so on for solar to work down south. In the Netherlands solar right now is an investment you earn back in 7 years, with a lifespan of 30 years allowing you to go close to neutral on electrical expenditures. But a lot of that is due to subsidies.

>>57463858
Nuclear is pretty safe. Chernobyl was a case of failure during a stress test in the fucking Soviet Union, not known for being efficient at anything. And we are also 40 years further in nuclear design. No reactor in a western country ever failed, even Fukushima the damage was limited and Japan is built on an active fault line notorious for huge earthquakes. NPPs in Europe have never experienced issues and waste disposal is hardly a concern. One NPP generates less than a tonne of radioactive waster per year with a half life of about a century. That is very manageable.

You make it sound dumb but it is kind of true. More so for wind than solar. You cant just put a wind turbine anywhere, especially not a 100m tall 40 mW/h unit. In the north of Europe its either placing them on the sea or not at all at this point. Solar is more flexible, while there are optimization questions, you can put a solar panel almost anywhere and if it catches light it will produce some amount of energy.

I mean that really depends on the costs to benefit ratio right. As it is, solar panels are dirt cheap (100 euros will buy you a 400 watt panel) and they last a very long time because its hardly more than some crystals and a basic semiconductor. So even though conditions are suboptimal, whether or not you make money is dependent on the price of grid electricity and also how much you use. I personally have rigged my whole house to be off grid with solar and batteries, and my electricity is free. Up front costs are not too bad and I can run this set up for safely 30 years with minimal replacements. And yeah I live in Northern Europe.

But for commercial solar parks intended to supply the grid? Well first of all as of now none of those are commercially viable due to the issues around peaks and the inability to store energy efficiently. But if the goal is maximum solar energy produced by a park for the grid, sure Spain is better. But energy demand in Spain isnt exactly comparable to the Benelux area, seeing as industry plays a factor. So solar as a direct to demand source is actually still very efficient. You just dont want it to be a grid supplier, and general circumstances like demand, density, legislation, prices etc make far more difference than just hours of sunlight.
