I agree with this, I was allowed to slip through the cracks of society and even encouraged to claim due to various mental illnesses. The welfare system has actively facilitated me becoming a parasitical organism, and if I try to pry myself out of this pit I'm met with a host of women who think they're caring by shoving me back into it and telling me it's okay because I'm sick. i agree, learning to properly handle or even utilize my flaws instead of excusing them as autism has brought me a long way.
id like to think i would have, but i cant say for sure that i wouldve acted the same if i was diagnosed as a kid and that excuse was an option.
however, aside from any potential technical reasons, i also started considering a diagnosis because being able to easily explain to others why i might act unusual when they ask sounded appealing.
i cant bring myself to ever suggest autism with no diagnosis unless im on my anonymous shrimp farming forums

Psychologists and doctors will ascribe health issues to your autism which can cause you to develop severe medical issues because doctors will miss them.

In legal matters, it can and often does become an issue for certain jobs, for example the military but also security clearences etc. There's also the stigma involved.
