I need guidance, there are 2012 American Silver Eagle BUs for 31.5€ or $34.2 in my country that are tempting me. But for a bit more I could buy myself a tiny but exciting RUBY! Gemstones are cooler, I've never held one. Wwyd?

Without knowing anything about the ruby it's hard to say, I don't know much about them but the value can be a lot but also be next to nothing - if the price is actually fair then could be cool for the novelty value though.

Saw someone post that a person should consider having an amount of gold equal to their country's reserves divide by the population. I suppose they meant that as a minimum?
It did make me think though: if gold becomes the backer of dollars again for a time I guess most people won't realize the need to buy until it's too late? Either shops will be closed or they will simply be priced out?

Every economy in the western world is dependent on the value of the dollar, and the dollar only gains its value from being used for oil purchases. Once that link is cut, which we're seeing slowly happening, all hell breaks loose and there will be a massive reevaluation of the currencies that were tied to the dollar. If you understand that retail gems are not an investment and will be an instant loss upon purchase then it's fine to pick up a few for the novelty. The best LCS I patronize sells gems that they remove from scrap jewelry for $1 each, no big diamonds or anything but they don't know much about gemstones whereas my dad studied the lapidary arts and knows what's up so we have accumulated plenty of lovely faceted gems, opals, cabochons and turquoise nuggets from their box of stones that were definitely worth more than a buck.

There was a thread the other day on /pol/ talking about gold reserves and how much of it everyone would get if their nation's stock was shared equally.

UK:

Population = 67,866,446 people
Gold Reserves = 310.29 Tonnes / 9976055toz

9976055toz ÷ 67,866,446 people = 0.1469953944545733toz

That's effectively 0.15toz per person, so if you're a UK citizen and own a gold sovereign you would own more gold than what the nation would be able to give to you if its gold reserves were spread evenly.

Isn't it ironic how liberals (leftists) have become massive supporters of megacorporations, government and warfare just over the last 20 years?

Also, isn't it funny how the easier it becomes to be a stay-at-home housewife (Roomba, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, microwave, oven, refrigerator, freezer, electricity, HVAC, plumbing, TV, etc.) the more women want to purposefully put themselves into debt and be a corporate wage-slave for the next 50 years of their life?

I have concerns that coins minted by companies - like Le Grande or Germania or Bavarian - under the flags of banana republics specifically to avoid certain taxes for the bullion will always be considered candy, rather than numismatic. Have you done any housework yourself? Guess not. Probably should talk to mommy how she's doing…
I'm not that old that I know how stuff was 100 years ago first hand, but trust me, there's still a lot of work left, even with all the amenities. E.g. the washing machine: True, much easier than washing stuff by hand, but back in the day, you had two sets of clothes (workday and sunday) which you washed rather rarely (imagine the smell…) and nowadays, you've almost got a full set of dirty laundry every day.

Cool stuff!
Any geologist is going to know about VSMOW. We use it as a baseline in mass spectrometry to calculate oxygen isotopes ratios as a proxy for water temperature in paleosols.

Basically the main tool used in paleoclimatology. We also use it for interesting stuff like determining what dinosaurs ate based on the water temperature in their food as reflected by the water temperature in their body fossils as determined by comparison of oxygen isotopes in the fossils to Delta VSMOW.
For those sorts of calculations we use digital VSMOW. Just a set of numbers of the known isotope ratios of VSMOW, not the actual water itself. Very cool and interesting artifact!

yes, we use actual VSMOW for calibration about once a year. It requires a special order, and is expensive. I'd guess your ampule would cost a couple hundred burger dollars and I'm not even going to ask how you got it. kek

I can give a better explanation of how and why isotopes change with water temperature but I'd be way off topic and probably bore the shit out of everyone.

Neat. What machine are you running? I only know Los Gatos TIWA machines for wate stable isotopes, and they need 4 standards at every run. It's a mililiter each, but yeah, that adds up quickly.

though perhaps not

since the history and evolution of VSMOW really dates back to Nazi science in pursuit of nuclear power and weapons. And it's an interesting history. VSMOW and similar standards were invented primarily for the extraction of heavy water for use in nuclear reactors, something the nazis were very close to doing.

Basically how it works is the 2 stable isotopes of oxygen that make up most water have different weights (duh). When water evaporates, the lighter isotopes evaporate faster leaving more of the heavy isotopes behind. When water condenses, more of the light molecules are picked up from the air.
So the ratio of heavy to light isotopes changes as water heats up or cools off, and this ratio can be calibrated to a thermometer using VSMOW as the baseline "normal" standard.

What this means is if you have a sample of, say, ground water, I can tell you the temperature it was at when you collected it by the ratio of isotopes. That's boring and unnecessary. But on a sedimentary rock I can tell you about what temperature the water it formed in was based on the ratio of isotopes. That's a bit more useful.
And on an animal fossil, we can tell the temperature of the water it consumed either as food or drink if we can find a part of the fossil that formed rapidly enough to encase the water molecules of the animal or plant, but durable enough not to have absorbed groundwater during the permineralization process. For example mollusk shells or the enamel of dinosaur teeth. And while water temperature of dinosaur food isn't direct proof of what a dinosaur was eating, we find that dinosaurs that ate fish have a colder water temperature than, say, dinosaurs that ate plants or meat. So it's useful for that sort of stuff.

Don't you be dissing hydrogeologists!
And you don't really get the temp from collection, you get the temp it precipitated at, i.e. the elevation it's from, and that's neither boring nor unnecessary. Well, OK, I guess the boring part is true for 99% of the population, but figuring you where your (drinking) water comes from is rather important.
>We used an internal standard for most calibrations. No way we were going to calibrate with VSMOW every day.
We're using the Los Gatos readymade standards, but as they're approahcing VSMOW in price, I'm really looking into mxing my own internalt standards too. The distributor we're getting them from raised the price by 50% in the last year.
Fucking inflation.

In the long run: probably yes. But it's a lot of upfront costs to get started, especially when you need for of them covering everying from rather enriched to very depleted. But if the prices keep rising like that, the equition might change.
