Reminder: If you are in North America the ONLY silver/gold coins that you should be stacking are American Silver Eagles and American Gold Eagles. They are the most sought after and most liquid government backed bullion in the world. You can trade with or sell them at a premium also. Stop buying rounds and meme garbage if you are in America. ASE and AGE are the very best choice long term.

Try selling 10,000 ounces of silver meme rounds or bars to a coin dealer, They will deny you and laugh at you. Now try selling 10,000 American Silver Eagles and they will buy all of them over spot price. You chuds buying generic rounds might as well be flushing your fiat down the drain.

I agree to an extent that everyone should have some ASEs and junk silver. But overall the most important factor in wealth preservation will be the weight of your stack. If ASEs have a $12 premium then you would be wise to buy generic. The nature of the scarcity of silver will have people buying whatever they can get. And if silver rockets to $500 and everyone is needing it, ASEs will not maintain a 50% premium. Sure, it will be more desirable than generic. But if you just stick to the generic you will come out ahead. That 50% premium could have been another half and ounce which is $250 left on the table (bad math, I know. But it illustrates the point that if silver moves like we think it will then it might not matter as much as we think).
I do think there could be some bonus to owning U.S. Mint coinage which may allow you to buy back into the system on preferable terms so there may be some unknown utility we are not aware of.
I usually prefer to trust the GSR and use that to dictate what is cheap and what is expensive. But regardless I think having a gold AGE is prudent. Most other gold can probably be swapped in for silver since the ratios say silver is so cheap.

As a fellow leafer, I like to diversify. Sure maples are pretty, but so are ASE (especially type 1 imo). Krugs are awesome, but nothing shines more than a brit to me. Don't get me started on how beautiful the mexican boobas are. Once you have a hundred or two oz of maples branch out a little. Don't be afraid to test the waters, but buy what you like best. And if thats solely maples, then so be it. Cheers!

Probably just grab something cheap and generic. Keep in mind that some 10oz bars can be substantially more expensive than generic. A 9fineAPMEX bar's low price could be like $255 on sale whereas a Wallstreet Mint 10oz bar could be $340. At the end of the day its all the same metal, and the secret is to get your hands on these assets at the cheapest cost possible. There are plenty of stories of people who FOMO over news events and end up throwing their money away thinking your last chance to buy is TODAY. Better to play it cool and be level headed because the nature of premiums is that you lose money up front as the price of holding the physical asset.
The war in Ukraine kicked off and I was drinking and bought a 100oz JM bar for $3500. I bought a $340 10oz bar last year as well when spot was $26 with massive premiums. It's complete lunacy if you are not careful. But in the moment you can justify every last bit of a stupid impulse buy. Only in retrospect to look back on the statements in horror.

I'm new to precious metals. Looking to finally buy today and start stacking every two weeks with about 1k AUD ($650 USD). My plan was to buy 1KG silver bars over coins for maximum value.
Is this a bad idea or should I collect a mix of gold/silver/bars/coins? The alternative is 10g bars of gold.
Can anyone give any insight into what will perform best in the long run?

The KOMSCO shields are part of a series. There have been at least 3 shields that I can recall (Greek, Korean, and European knight). I'm not sure if there are more planned for the series. Do any frens here have experience using e-Z-est brand coin dip cleaner? I picked up a jar recently but haven't experimented yet. I do know that if you leave silver in the normal sterling jewelry dips for too long the surfaces get slightly "etched" or frosty (sadly not the WOW! kind of frosty), so I wonder if e-Z-est is more safe and gentle or if it needs to be used very carefully too?

He was asking street vendors of random knickknacks and antiques about coins and one perked up, said that yes he had lots of rare old coins, then led gramps down some winding alleys to a hole-in-the-wall he disappeared into to retrieve a box of coins. Grandpa bought 10 of them, all horrible cast brass and sloppily silver-plated fakes. Thankfully they were cheap, their primary value being the lessons they taught me at an early age about the inherent moral character of the Chinese and the existence and appearance of counterfeits. Your fakes appear higher quality than the junk I got so I doubt I would have been able to recognize them as such as a kid.

Perhaps Apmex is good for ancient or other specialized things, but I am indeed a buyer of fairly mainstream stuff, and can attest that their premiums are maybe 10% higher than other vendors for such stuff.
But sometimes they have exclusive items that i just have to get, like the Icons of Inspiration series. Then to get free shipping I have to add a bunch of other things, and that's when I realize it's almost worth it to just buy the one thing and pay shipping. Examples:
$31.77 vs: $27.29
https://www.boldpreciousmetals.com/product/4471/2024-1-oz-somalia-elephant-silver-coin
That's a pretty big hike for a common coin.
Pic related: must-have exclusive.

As for the shield, well... It's years old now, so it's amazing it's anywhere. And that's Apmex's strong point. Their inventory is awesome.

I'm not sure you understand why generic rounds are just fine and will sell for no issue. You seem to think we can only sell to people and coin dealers.... who actully buys silver for industrial use? Companies will purchase silver directly to bypass the uneeded middle man. 1oz round .999 is the same refining as .999 coin. Both get melted, purified and used for their application. Most people here are not fliping silver like stocks and crypto, we hold it as we love heavy shiny things that piss off the right people.

You know, I was wondering if I should make my first ounce fractional. Although I'm in Leafland.
But surely if gold becomes like "normal" money again (until a new fiat system is conjured and grows corrupt) then gold is gold, no?
Plus with so many ways to have power not connected to the normal grid and shield electronics nowadays (never mind tech not yet unveiled) governments likely have plans to make a new fiat ASAP even if every bill has to be backed by something tangible in the beginning, no?
Like there are so many contingency plans for things nowadays.

I updated Nov 2023. I hadn't done it for a year before then, and more silver had of course been mined and more people on the planet. I didn't update gold because I couldn't find proper documentation at the time, and I haven't looked since. 367 is my best reasonable calculation.
But you can download the sheet or re-create it and play with numbers you uncover or find more realistic.

That's a little harsh, but founded on truth. Gotta say though, over the time I've collected, the stamped copper bars have gone from $7.50/lb to at least $20/lb now. Its too bad it's so cheap. The sheer mass needed to make a dent in a portfolio even at 3x is enormous.
But I love the look of clean, polished copper.

They're not even used for the same things. I don't think it's a competition between the 2 metals, I think platinum is just maturing and growing still.
We couldn't even refine it until like the 18th century. It's a baby compared to gold.

tl,dr; It's a gamble - buy only when its price is low, like now.
It has an uncertain future. Its current main use is in catalytic converters to reduce toxic emissions from internal combustion engines. Although ICEs may possibly never go away (too simple, great power in a small package, fuel has other uses as well...), their production may significantly drop.
One foreseeable salvation for Pt is in hydrogen fuel cells (HFCs). There are a great many advantages to HFCs over electric vehicles, but the technology to make them safe is still a bit behind. My own vision of the future has HFCs as the dominant energy source for vehicles: easy to swap cells (for quick refueling) and lots of power in a small package. Rarity of essential elements (from China mostly) may hinder the evolution and practicality of electric vehicles.

>chinese knife money is really interesting and would have been very practical in a time when various metal blades were in constant demand

Only the very first tool monies would have been functional, the alloys used for the later more standardized "knife money" and the like were often unsuitable for use as tools. Scholarship is scant but it's believed that the more abstracted knife, hoe, and axe money evolved from the cast but unfinished tools made by itinerant bronze workers which were not yet hammer hardened, sharpened or mounted to a handle, and were popular trade or proto-currency items due to their practical value as tools and their weight in bronze which could always be recycled into something else. The evolution of functional tools of good alloys into non functional monies made of impractical alloys probably took centuries. In Europe caches of bronze axes are very common, also hoards of sickles and to a lesser extent chunky bracelets/arm rings and spearheads, all of which i suspect were regarded as a sort of money too.

Having a bunch of coins to look at and play with is a lot easier if you've got a lot of coins, therefore it's cheaper to stack silver. Silver will NEVER hit the moon though and it is ALWAYS better to stack gold over silver. People are stacking it here because they believe that shit will hit the fan, but don't realise that if the world does collapse then we'll have a long period of chaos, followed by a longer period of small communities that trade resources and skills before civilization returns and you start using gold/silver to trade. This won't happen until at least 50+ years after a complete collapse of the financial system.
Stack silver because you think they're neat coins, or you don't have a lot of money (even then better to stack gold, such as sovereigns).
Stack gold because you want a hedge against inflation.

Personally, I'm never selling my stack. I prune it now and then, coins I don't care for or have overpaid for; nut never selling.
inb4 shill, pic related are my eBay 0.925 scrap coins. All bought at spot or £1.50 above.

>government backed
This would be the same government that made owning gold illegal and then destroyed our currencies worldwide? That government? Weren't the Aussies lying about the gold content in their coins?

nope, our ancestors couldn't refine it until 17th-18th century and it's not found all over the world like gold & silver, so it wasn't and isn't a suitable form of money
