A single share of GOOG goes for $145 right now.

GOOG240119C00144000, a call option with a strike of $144 goes for $1.66 right now

With an investment of 145 dollars, I could either buy a single GOOG share or 87 calls.

Imagine GOOG appreciates to 150.

Had I purchased a single GOOG share, I would have a profit of 5 dollars. However, if I purchased 87 calls, I'd have a profit of about 5*87 = 435 dollars.

Calls have a nominal appreciation as large as the original stock as price goes up, right?

What is incorrect about this rationale? Like I said, I'm very new to the markets

Yes, and you can figure out the leverage using the price of your option, its delta (the price of an at-the-money option usually moves about 50 cents for every dollar the stock does), and the price of the underlying.

Notice you are completely fucked if you buy an ultra-short-dated call and it moves against you even a tiny bit.

You can use them to protect against market and sector declines. Or bet on certain time-sensitive events. Or lever up a good bet. Or bet on something's decline while capping your downside (as opposed to shorting)

Or degenerately gamble on a chart second by second.

People around these parts generally use them for that last one but those other uses are much more profitable.

They own Nanobot R&D labs around the world.

You likely have Bogdabots inside you right now.

The Bogdanoffs are in regular communication with the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, forwarding the word of God to the Orthodox Church. Who do you think set up the meeting between the pope & the Orthodox high command (First meeting between the two organisations in over 1000 years) and arranged the Orthodox leader’s first trip to Antarctica in history literally a few days later to the Bogdanoff bunker in Wilkes land?

They learned fluent French in under a week.

Now that the dust has settled, let's be serious, sincere and honest:

The market doesn't care about data at all.

In November 0,1% less inflation on the CPI caused a gigapump and this whole shitshow, but a higher CPI in december compared to November and even higher CPI in january which ALSO missed by 0,2% didn't do shit.

It actually just shows that the Fed is a bitch. Cause the market knows, the Fed can't do much more than hold or at will not do more than hold IF AT ALL.

I bought IBIT opening day. Already have 5 figure unrealized losses. 2024 is off to a great start.

>> No.57278784

Found this file called born suckers on my old laptop. The notes I was taking back in 2017. Probably from some book. Wow. Literally me.

Self-attribution Bias: We attribute our successes to ourselves, and we blame our losses on others or bad luck. This hobbles us in two ways. First, we don't learn from our mistakes because we don't see them as mistakes. Second, we assume we are skilled or smart when we're just lucky.

The Gambler's Fallacy: We tend to believe, incorrectly, that if a flipped coin has come up heads three times in a row it is more likely come up tails next time. Similarly, just because a stock or market has gone up or down for a while doesn't mean it is more likely to go the other way soon.

Prospect Theory: We have an irrational tendency to sell our winners to lock in profits and keep our losers to avoid taking losses. This causes us to sell too early when the market is going up and too late when it is going down. We also feel the pain of loss more than the pleasure of gain and, therefore, blow out losing positions in panic when we should just hang on.

Conservatism Bias and Confirmatory Bias: Once we form opinions, we tend to overvalue information that reinforces them and undervalue information that undermines them (conservatism bias). We even tend to seek out supporting information (confirmatory bias). Thus, we irrationally cling to incorrect conclusions, and, to paraphrase Simon and Garfunkel, hear what we want to hear and disregard the rest.

Overoptimism: We tend to be overoptimistic and overconfident. According to James Montier, when students are asked whether they will perform in the top half of their class, an average of 80 percent say yes. This tendency makes it easier for part-time hobbyists to dismiss a century's worth of academic research showing that only a tiny fraction of full-time professionals can beat the market.

>> No.57278789

Outcome Bias: We tend to evaluate decisions based on outcomes instead of probabilities. Thus, we congratulate ourselves for stupid choices that happen to turn out well and vow to never again make smart choices that happen to turn out badly. Our errors get reinforced, and our wise decisions rejected.

Buffett's "Rearview Mirror": We base our expectations for the future on what has happened in the recent past. Thus, we are most bullish at the end of long bull markets, when we should be most bearish, and most bearish at the end of long bear markets, when we should be most bullish.

Hindsight Bias: When we reflect on the past, we imagine that we knew what was going to happen when we didn't. As James Montier puts it, "You didn't know it all along, you just think you did." This allows us to imagine, for example, that we knew that the tech boom of the late '90s was a bubble and that everyone who suggested otherwise was an idiot or crook. It also makes us overconfident about our ability to predict what will happen next.

AAPL selling at 186 within 3 years it will probably be 250. that is a 25% a year increase. pick another stock that will do that i would say for hypothetical AAPL and GOOGL. boom you just averaged 50% a year return by buying and holding two solid companies for 3 years. why do people complicate this shit and why is everyone shilling etfs and over diversifcation. what warren buffet did wasn't rocket science it was literally just picking obvious winners and holding them for a bit.

now etfs aren't necessarily a bad thing but a) they have fees, b) you are extremely diversified. i also believe there is serious overshilling of ETFs by brokerages that manage them. just go on reddit and mention buying stocks and you will get 100s of comments saying you should just buy VTI and "chill".

idk what you guys think about it but to me buy and hold with specific target prices that are reasonably timed away (3 years) seems like an easy way to average 20% annual and make etf shills cry.

not sure if this it the right place to ask but I've been looking to be smarter about investing. I've been advised by people I trust to read into dividend stocks and REITs but there is a lot of bullshit out there to sift through. Stocks claiming 10% (or more) dividend yield per quarter are obviously bullshit, but what dividend yield is considered "average"? A lot of the REITs in particular I've been looking at seem to not really go up or down in value much over the past few years, but that just means it's possibly a safe-ish choice right?

is there some more nuanced research I should be doing about these other than:
>pick a few that appear to be staying steady or growing slowly over several years and has an OK yield
>and also specializes in a real estate sub-market that I think will see growth over the next 5-10 years

there are so many videos out there saying which stocks to pick and they all set off so many bullshit alarms in my head, not looking for that. I want to know how to do appropriate research for myself on lower risk long-term investments using income based strategies.

Make sure it hasn't done what a lot of tech companies have done recently: get rid of R&D (or in the case of Apple, the minimum line engineers needed to even maintain what they have) and turn themselves into essentially holding companies. Is this interpretation correct?

People buy/sell BTC proxies like Microstrategy or miners. No impact on bitcoin price, people just arb the share price using NAV and BTC CEX prices

People used GBTC as a BTC proxy before, no impact on bitcoin price

GBTC is a now an ETF so when people sell, bitcoin is actually redeemed and dumped, impacting bitcoin price? So actual btc sell pressure from $28 billion btc appears out of nowhere (emphasized by the shit 1.5% fee people want to get out of)

Instead of investing, say, $100K all at once, I should've just put, say, $2.5K into it on a monthly basis for the next couple of years, right?
I've made a negligible profit after these first two weeks, but do I just cash it all out and start DCA'ing instead? If there's a crash in March like some people on here say, I would be utterly fucked from having bought near ATH.

Remember to invest in toll-booth-style companies. The business model is fairly simple: Create an infrastructure and take a bit of revenue from everything that passes through it. Perhaps one of the greatest toll-booth model businesses of all time is Visa's payment processing infrastructure.

Every time a Visa-branded card is swiped, the company collects a small fee for using its network -- and it adds up. This has been incredibly profitable, with Visa consistently posting some of the highest profit margins of any company.

Don't take my word for it but Facebook will end up like Myspace, it's user base will mostly be boomers since younger people are on Twitter, Instagram (Facebook), and tiktok. Most people who are into video games (like genuinely like video games, not average normalfags that buy a PS5 for basketball 2024 and looter shooter 7) think Meta is a fucking joke as it exists on a closed platform, needs a Facebook account for your hardware, and is controlled by Lizardberg.

Compound decay doesn't turn a 2x into 0.9x.

No, what kills "buy and hold SPY/SSO/UPRO" is that the next 30 years of America are not going to be like the last 70.
