Where does GameStop go from here? Their web3 initiative was supposed to be the future. An NFT marketplace for buying and selling digital assets. You buy the game, you sell it directly to your friend. GameStop and the developer gets a cut from the transaction. A digital receipt that would eventually spread to all aspects of digital ownership. Music, movies, rental houses, everything would be backed by NFTs. Further, GameStop was the future of the financial system. They would tokenize their own securities and annihilate the naked shorts by forcing every share to be accounted for with a unique NFT identifier.
GameStop was on the cutting edge. The shift from brick and mortar to ecommerce was palpable. They were going to branch into esports before quietly axing those plans. They made an ill fated deal with FTX. They closed unprofitable stores to cut costs and may soon even show a profit this quarter. But as what? A brick and mortar used video game retailer. There is no more turnaround planned. Everything has failed. With Walmart and Best Buy not selling physical media anymore, the writing is on the wall. Video game consoles are being sold digital only with the option to purchase an attachable disc drive. In the future there will not even be this option. Physical media is dead. Zoomers do not give a shit about holding a box or reading manuals (not that any games have manuals these days). They want to download a game instantly and play it then and there. There will be no need for GameStop in the future. They're obsolete. And Ryan Cohen has struggled to make them relevant. His tweet said "Don't judge me by my words, judge me by my actions". Personally I find the man hilarious, his anti-vax tweets in particular caused much seethe in the cringemines but if I'm judging him by his actions, I find him lacking.
