Not that important if you are well connected or have a sufficient amount of relevant work experience and the required skill set. Otherwise you are fucked

Just do some internships and it won't matter. But if you've never worked, the guy screening your resume will have to start with your school and GPA.

How does one do that?

It seems Github wants you to "fork" things to contribute to them, I don't really want to start my own forked project.

It's all about those connections.

If someone likes to talk to you and your relevant to the job they're hiring for, there's a good chance you'll be hired.

Getting connections in Computer Science, compete in a hack-a-thon or something and talk to the companies that host them.

You find a project on github, look at outstanding issues, pick an issue, fork the project, fix the bug, and do a pull request.

Do you not know how to use git? Nevermind, don't answer that.

I have a friend with a shitty GPA in compsci like you who can't code for beans. He ended up getting a $40k/yr job maintaining some crappy website CMS for a 3rd or 4th rate for profit law school in LA.

>I have a friend with a shitty GPA in compsci like you who can't code for beans
3.2 is hardly shitty, especially when the maximum here is 4 and I can code fine, I just don't do online projects because I don't know which ones to contribute to.

I tell you what, I do have a github account, I have tried it, point me to an issue and I'll solve it right now. I have about 2 hours of clearthinking left until I crash from lateness.

Sorry, I was thinking white collar.

So if you're looking for a job in engineering, your uncle could be a highly connected person, but it's unlikely he'll set you up because it's likely you'll be too much risk for him. You could be a really shit worker. At the moment, the best my dad is willing to do for me is place my resume at people's desk, so I'm assured interviews instead of being ignored.

Whereas, my dad is a reputable name in his field and people know he's a good worker. He gets job offers all the time, he's not a risk to offer a job to.

The exception here is in eastern countries, where literally anything goes and you could get a job as the lead developer when you have no programming experience whatsoever. I've personally seen this happen.

GPA is unfortunately a huge filter in parts of the US. My GPA fell just short of a 3.0 (barely, not a 2.4) due to a severe issue during my sophomore year. My major GPA was fine, but I certainly damaged myself. Many of the employers my classmates interviewed at were not interested in interviewing me after hearing my GPA despite loving my resume, including Apple. It was painful, and greatly hurt my job search.

I was persistent and got a great job at a great company, and now that I have my first job...no one gives a single fuck what my college GPA is. I've interviewed at other companies (offers are not enticing enough to leave) and they haven't even asked.

tl;dr a little and a lot

>> No.57133

Um, let me put it like this. I only list my major GPA (3.1, barely), and I've NEVER been asked about my GPA in the 4 or 5 interviews I had since graduating. No job yet, but I've been grilled more about why I left part-time college jobs than on GPA, grades, courses. I have been asked about courses I've taken, projects I worked on. Once, I was asked about a grade I got on a specific final project that I told them about. Like they'll actually look it up.

So, just don't act like it's a big deal. Show them that you know your shit. Some jobs have a minimum GPA requirement listed, or things like "strong academic performance"... I never got interviews for those jobs when I applied to them, but no big deal, that's maybe 20% of entry-level listings (except engineering, most have a 2.7-3.0 minimum)
