American Commemorative gold, mostly produced in the 1980s, is also typically very low premium.

when the price rises, to let us say 3k/oz, which will eventually happen, none of the premiums you are paying now will translate into a substantially higher sale price, because everyone will be selling, and conversely very few people will be buying from the dealers, as they will assume that the price will soon fall. why sell your 2300-2400/oz fractionals for 3k when you could sell your 2100/oz discount bin gold for the same price? the sale price will be roughly the same for all of it.

Bob is the guy that lives on a mine and mines are somewhat rare, not extremely expensive if i remember, but you'd need 2 save up quite a bit if you're waging. I took the machining route long ago. Now i stack large chunks of aluminum as well as copper, silver and gold. Oh and manganese bronze rods and aluminum bronze ones. I have zero titanium left, usually i get it in chunks from the customer. Turning silver on a lathe feels like medium carbon steel, the swarf is really curly, i had trouble getting a good finish grinding the small sample. Donno what happened to those little chunks, paper weights in a tool drawer somewhere on the shop floor.
I machined a bar of gold for someone once, they let me keep the swarf, milled a 1/32" bit right through it. Felt like soft aluminum, really gummy and i had to clean off my bare hss cutter, had i used carbide and coolant it may have been a different feel.
