Unsure if this is the right place
But my uncle built me this little treasure chest with plastic wrapped coins and toy jewels when I was young and I never unwrapped it. It's filled with $1 US coins. If I recall it's about $50 worth.

I was curious if I open this, what to do with the coins to preserve them better.
Also curious as to how much they may be worth?

I see one of them is stamped 2000, hard to see the others

Cupronickel is fairly chemical resistant, if they were silver id worry a tiny bit about the plasticizers reacting or whatnot [another anon explained it well]. Thats why the silver round slips feel like brittle plastic, they are produced without the plasticizers. A coin shop dude told me that the way you can tell is if u fold over a tiny piece of it, if it leaves a crease, it should be safe, but if its able to fold and has that slight tarp like feel to it, thn its most likely vinyl/pvc of some sort and i forgot how they react, iirc they leave faint little green splotches on the silver

I typically spend about $50 a month on each of two separate credit cards on random shit just to pay it off in full and build credit history but I think I'm gonna start accumulating silver rounds with one instead. I was using both to slowly stock my home bar but now that its got some in it I think I'll just use one card for the last bit. May as well use/build my credit in a way that doesn't actually impact me financially. I'm sure I'm losing a few dollars in premium for orders of single 1 oz rounds at a time but eh whatever I was spending it on 100% loss things before anyways

gonna build a nice little 5 stack of these year of the dragon coins first they look dope

>what to do with the coins to preserve them better.
you can buy inexensive coin holders/capsules fomr most of the online coin and bullion dealers.
look on their website menu for "accessories, supplies", etc.
they makevarious types and sizes to fit any coin or round thats ever been made
>how much they may be worth?
- You could start by googling somehting like "Sacajawea dollar coin value" or whatever
- you could buy a "blue book" of coin values and look there.
- check eBay or online coin dealer websites to see if they sell the same coin you have and see what their sale price is

I've seen modern non-silver coins like the Esienhower dollar and the Sacejewea dollars listed for sale in the range of $10/ea. or thereabouts depending on year and condition. i dont know why, bwcaue you can go to the bank and get them for face value of course. well, the Eisenhowers not so much, but maybe the Sacejeweas.

I'm totally rooting for him, just don't want him hurt or dead.

First time I mixed aqua regia I was 14 and didn't have access to the nitric, so I asked my science teacher to help. After class we go into the chemical closet and I give him a little glass beaker full of scrap jewelry. Not pyrex, just regular glass.

I tell him how much of each acid I want in the bottle. He pours in the HCL. Then he gets the nitric and starts to pour into the jar. It immediately begins to boil so he shoves a rubber CORK in it! Luckily it blew the cork out and vomited hot acid in a stream hitting the 8 foot ceiling. Then the jar broke in a puddle of hot acid. If the jar had busted before the eruption we'd have both been burnt all to hell. As it was he sent me home while he cleaned up and I got an A in his class.

my later experiments with the stuff didn't go quite as well.

Ok I went back and watched a youtube vid to see what you're attempting. If you don't use a hot plate, it should be safe enough as long as the windows are open and you're working right next to them. Or under the hood fan for the oven if you have one.

It also shouldn't work unless you're using extremely high grade gold scrap as feedstock. Like escrap that's been treated to remove the gold from the copper.

The regulatory agencies that will bust your ass are OSHA, MSHA, EPA, and your county zoning board.

>>57218682

also even doing a cold dissolution of relatively pure gold I'd recommend doing it outside. Seriously, that stuff isn't good for you or anything you own. The fumes instantly rust metal in the house, corrode metal. Burn lungs and sinuses. And that's if it's cold and the gold is quite pure to begin with.

if you heat it, or add metals other than gold, you're really going to have some problems.

>> No.57218800

>>57218657
>youtube university is real!
yeah most of what I'm seeing is bullshit.

cold aqua regia WILL dissolve gold but it dissolves every other metal first, and the other metals cause the gold to precipitate. Same problem you have with cyanide solutions.

So what you actually do is
>melt the scrap
>pour the scrap into water to form beads
>roll the beads through the mill to form foil
>wash the foil with nitric or sulfuric to get rid of silver and base metals
>filter the dross
>melt the dross
>part the dross into beads again
>roll through the mill again
>cook in aqua regia to separate gold and plat group.
that is all.

most of the refining is done by removing other metals using straight nitric or sulfuric, leaving the gold and plat groups behind. Even then your gold isn't going to be particularly pure.

>> No.57218824

>>57218800
>wash the foil with nitric or sulfuric to get rid of silver and base metals
this step can be done with any compound that dissolves most metals but doesn't dissolve gold. Stuff like lemon juice or vinegar or hydrogen peroxide would probably work, but very slowly.

It doesn't work well with hydrochloric (muriatic) because hydrochloric acid will very slowly dissolve gold.

finding the right process is a combination of cost, safety, and speed. Generally metals are purified with nitric or sulfuric acids because they're cheap and fast. But not particularly safe to work with.

>> No.57218868

>>57218824
also this is one of two steps that can kill a person. Treating base or precious metals with either nitric or aqua regia will release large amounts of oxides of nitrogen which are generally deadly in an enclosed space, and which a tiny little hood and filter can't handle.

hey bobbro,
Can't complain too much, but i'm sure i can do much better. Something i'm working on rn is leverage arbitrage opportunities between different ebay domains (.pt, .de, .sp, etc..) to my advantage, especially on the foreign coins sections. Not later than yesterday i saw a bunch of medieval french coins selling on the portuguese ebay for maybe 15% of their resale value here, and most the best deals i secure here also are for foreign coins (like those swiss coins i just won). Slurping local rare coins (for me) from uninteressed countries, and vice versa, seems like a potential gold mine. I need to figure out how to do it efficiently (especially the monitoring) and breach the potential shipping limitations.

I want 2024 to be the year where i stop being a giga poorfag, and i'm extra motivated toward this goal, fren!

>>57219063
You appear to be off to a really good start. Sorry I don't have any advice on whether to grade those coins or not, usually I don't bother getting stuff graded unless the grade will double the price or the item is often faked. And I don't know that either one is true in your case.

for me getting the cheapies is half the battle, the other half is waiting 1-10 years for a buyer to notice the thing and slurp it up. Ebay is terrible for getting Buy-It-Now sales out where people can see them unless you pay to promote which I never do. Auctioning sells faster but I lose money auctioning items about half the time.

I don't think you're a poorfag at all, you're making some pretty big buys, and you will probably go a lot bigger.

All what you said is very true. If the promoting thing is a fixed rate, like $1.95 per item, i guess it could be worth it to get some extra visibility for big value items. But in general i hate giving ebay any extra money if i can avoid it, they already are making far too much from my ass for my own liking.

>I don't think you're a poorfag at all, you're making some pretty big buys, and you will probably go a lot bigger.
Well i feel really poor, and i truly am, but when i look around me and see most my friends with close to zero savings, zero investments and spending most their salaries on complete crap i guess it could be worse. The only difference is i'm a literal squirrel compared to them.
The saying about "it's not how much you earn, but how much you spend" ring truer to my ears every passing day.

But on the other hand, i may be too deep on the stingy side of life, i can't remember the last time i gifted myself a nice experience. I wont find myself a girl by hermit-maxxing and playing it stingy to the point all my socks are holed, that's for sure kek. I think i may need one of your life advice on the matter, wise bob-sama.

lol I wear my socks until all the toes are showing through. I buy clothes at walmart for the cheapest price available. If anyone cares how I dress, I don't want to be around that person.

Most people I know don't have a couple hundred euro to drop on coins every month. And if they did they'd blow it on something else instead. I don't even usually have that much. My average purchase of coins is $25, and I rarely buy more than a couple hundred dollars worth in a single batch. If you can get a system worked out you'll be far from poor. I try to double my money on coins, so if I spend a thousand per month I try to sell two thousand. But at that rate I'm only making a thousand a month. But I got it for free doing something I love. And that's what gets a dude friends and women I think. Not what you do or how much you make, but that you love it. If you love what you're doing other people will be interested in it too. And interested in you.

not sure if that's wise, but I believe it to be true.

And tbf i can't function otherwise, i need to be my own boss and do things the way i like, being a wagie drone never did it for me, it always ended up confrontational with the hierarchy after few months/weeks.

Something i wanted to do for a long while is creating a youtube channel and posting a very long serie about all jewish crimes/treasons/conspiracies starting from antiquity up to today (6 millions episodes minimum). Ofc i would have to find another platform, but i hope i'll one day find the courage to overcome my shyness/tendancy to self-depreciation and create some content i'll share online.

Gold is the guaranteed grower while silver is more of a gamble. Look at the charts and you’ll see there are boomers that have been buying for decades and have bought both above and below current spot price. Gold has been a stable slow climber for forever.

I say all this as someone with currently too much silver who needs to balance the ratio. The high cost per ounce is why many go for the bulkier option; feels good to hold a kilogram of silver versus half an ounce of gold.

I am making a note to buy more gold as everyone should. Add beans and oatmeal to the list and you’re good to go, buddy.

Well, as a person who would be considered blue collar, but with a decent wage, it's hard to make a decision. I've tried to keep a balanced stack. My ratio is about 1:100. I'm planning for the time that people don't trust currency nor government and rely mostly on bartering. I've already acquired a homestead and am currently raising the quality of the soil for permaculture. I expect the government and its currency to collapse in or before 2033. Everyone I follow and is somewhat trusted has estimated this particular timeline, and the way events have been proceeding, I expect sooner rather than later.

I work for a company that has an employee ownership program, and the way things have been going, that I will not disclose, I expect the company to go public in the next year or so. I'm going to take out of my reserve of stock and purchase a decent amount of precious metals in the coming year and was wondering what would be the best in a collapse for general purchases, such as living goods. It's hard to rationalize gold for things such as flour and other perishables, but at the same time I have a decent supply of silver compared to the common NPC.

Apologies for the syntax. Again I am intoxicated, but not incapacitated.

Variety is key as there’s no “this is 100% the answer.”

Like >>57219880 said; mercs are a great option as is junk in general. Covering your bases and having a large store of divisible, recognizable, 90% silver is as valuable as a root cellar, an orchard, perennials, chickens, beans, etc.

I’ve got about 80 more trees to plant in my own permaculture pursuits. Cover crops this spring plus compost brought in before any chickens are making their own. Your ability to grow your own food will be increasingly valuable and I’m afraid it is going to become a rare skill.

>pic related. New coop and beds made from trees cut down on site sown to cover crops in October. Root veg, garlic, sweet potato slips, and perennials will be grown in these beds after a deep compost topdressing around April. Fruiting vegetables will be grown among the trees I’ve planted in the larger garden space.

A useless venture that was unwarranted, and I'm talking about college. My meme degree was computer science, a field dominated by post-2008 poojeets.

I appreciate the inputs. God bless. I hope you lads survive beyond the collapse and have many children.

Look into dioscorea polystachya. A root perennial that grows "air potatoes" as well as a biannual root. (I say that because supposedly the root is only good to harvest after the second or longer year for most climates.)

I would also suggest okra, corn, and a legume. They seem to do best in shitty to decent soils. Okra is more of a hot climate crop, thoughever. I'm from the Southeastern US.

Okra will be the bread and butter of my micro-farm (rocking barely an acre of production space) along with peppers, squash, sunchokes, and hardy herbs.

If you do greens, swiss chard is supposed to do decently in substitute to spinach. I get a lot of my seeds from Southern Seed Exposure. Check em out if you're below the Mason Dixon. Bruh, the "mobile clean room" in the screencap of your purchase is a laminar flow hood, it pumps filtered air *INTO* the box, so if you're mixing fuming acids in the box it'll blow caustic vapors directly in your face and into whatever space you're working in. The hood in your youtube video is a negative-pressure suction fume hood, I'd get one that vents outdoors but that is the sort of thing you want to use when messing with chemicals you clearly don't understand.

When you reach the point where you've looked at as many ancient coins as I have it's easy to recognize and identify things you've seen before, you're still getting your feet wet but trust me you'll get much better with time. Can you post a pic of the other side, and tell me what the coin weighs? Kinda looks like an obol or hemiobol. The crystallization shows that it is 100% without any doubt a genuine coin so while the condition isn't ideal I like crystallized ancient silvers because their authenticity is self-evident, hard to go wrong at such a low price.

0.53gr, so an obol most likely.
Obverse match the archaic Apollo's head facing left, so you were dead on. I'm a bit butthurt bcuz one single guy outbid me on all the nice looking obols on sale from that seller.

2 hours ago i won 2 auctions for "antique coins to identify", who were pretty easy to figure out now i'm seriously invested in doing my greek DD :
- one Seleucid kingdom tetradrachm from Philip Philadelph period, 13.5g
- one stephanophore tetradrachm from Arados, Phoenicia, 14.5g

Both in crap condition and covered with dirt, but i hope with a bit of distilled water, soap and few toothpicks i can make them pretty once again.
Not expecting miracles, but i paid slightly below 70€ for each, so whatever the result i'll be fine.

Practice outdoors upwind of the fumes with PPE before dropping a bunch of cash on stuff that may be of no use, and look into building your own fume hood that vents outside, the filters would get exhausted very quickly if you use a little hood that just pumps the air back into the room you're working in, those things aren't suitable for even small scale refining operations.

Yup, looks like an Archaic obol to me. Learn from the experience and focus a bit more on the nicer coins, it sucks when you're in the "cheapies mindset" and wind up losing all the nice things and are left with just the mediocre items, yeah you can flip for profit but I don't get much joy from working with coins I don't find personally appealing. Trying to get a great deal and losing the real prizes has left me with many regrets, whereas I have almost no regrets about the times I've reconsidered my strategy and bid higher than normal on the good pieces and then won them thanks to the more competitive bids.
>>57223311
nice tripdubs, I'm not intimately familiar with those tetradrachms but I do think they can be improved with cleaning, the lower one will be more straightforward to clean, the top one seems to have a bunch of that horn/redeposited silver crud, tyche's lips look pretty good so hopefully the actual surfaces of the rest of the coin are in similar condition under the crud but if so it will probably take more time and careful work to restore, big coins take a while to properly clean.

>Learn from the experience and focus a bit more on the nicer coins, it sucks when you're in the "cheapies mindset"
Don't worry i listened to your advices on the matter, now i'd say i dedicate 60/40 of my budget on nice condition coins vs crappy cheapies. Which is a big leap for me already since not long ago i was at 0/100. But since i get 15-20 cheapies for the price of 1 nice looking coin, it must looks like i only post cheapies kek.
But i've one or two nice looking ones who should soon show up in the mail that you may appreciate.

With a bit of self discipline, i'll reach 80/20 in the not to distant future i recon. Something who surprised me is the nice condition ones are much more liquid than the crappy looking ones. In my stingy mindset i thought most of the appeal would come from the tiny pricetag, but i was totally wrong on the matter it seems, so it incentivize me to focus more on the good looking stuff.

>similar condition under the crud but if so it will probably take more time and careful work to restore, big coins take a while to properly clean.
Gotcha, i'll go slow and steady on her. From the infos i gathered and my scrolling experience, the Philip one is pretty common and nothing impressive.
But the Tyche one (dressed with towers) from Phoenicia is a much rarer design, and i've seen prices going wild on catalogues for the SUP versions, so i'm very excited to restore her. If you don't mind, i'll post step by step my restoration so you can guide me and help me dodge mistakes.
I'll have to do it with my loupe since i don't have a microscope yet.
I started to look up to acquire an affordable one, but i'm not too sure on what model i should get.

Thanks for the offer, I have other projects I'm working on. You're free to ask anything you like here though.

PPE standard for that work in the US consists of rubber boots, dupont tychem coveralls or equivalent, nitrile gloves, chemtape around the ankles and wrists, safety glasses, and a face shield or maybe full mask respirator.

this is assuming you're working under a vented hood. If not, you're gonna need a lot more than a modified OSHA level D PPE.
