I also work for private individuals and corporations of all sizes.

by far the cheapest of these is private individuals. I usually turn down their work because they expect me to run a multimillion dollar operation on minimum wage or something.

The next worst is easily government. Cheap af penny pinchers watching every single dime. They employ a dozen people just to watch over every one of my crew. If there's waste there, it's because taxpayers think the government wastes money on contracts so instead they waste money overseeing contracts.

large corporations are by far the most lax about spending. They don't care what I charge so long as I'm the lowest qualified bidder and I do the job. They make and spend absurd amounts of money that most people can't even fathom.

Problem isnt roads per se, but two related problems. First one is that roads would only be build there which is profitable, meaning small towns and settlements will prolly get no roads since its not profitable to build them, while the state can afford to do such constructions to improve the overall quality of life in those remote areas.

Second problem is competition: if the roads are not goverment controlled, the toll to use them can go increasingly high due to three reasons: first one being that roads have a low substitution range (meaning there are few products that achieve the same. If you wanna go from A to B roads are usually the only type of product for this), highly inelastic (meaning people want to move from A to B so much, say if it was for work, that they cannot actually afford not to pay it if the price is high), and third: its physically impossible to have much competition in this area, given there is a physical limitation to how many competing roads or transportation systems you can have from A to B, that means a few companies can collude to keep prices high with few new competitors entering.

With no state roads would only be in wealthy areas, and they would be costly to use.
