market needs movement and liquidity to keep everyone interested in trading so it generates more volume and more volume makes market makers more money
prices of altcoins need a direction and mms need something to base it off of. they dont care which way the price goes in general (depending on the contract they have with the altcoin project owner) so the easiest thing to do is base your trading algo on the price of btc
